Plant cultivars with toler-ance to AI toxicity are essential for sustainableproduction in these acid savannas. The develop-ment of improved cultivars for these conditions isdependent on adaptive mechanisms geneticallytransmitted. These adaptive mechanisms are re-Iated to factors that impede the entrance of toxic AIinto the root cells and the interaction of AI withpolypeptide root exudates. The objective of thisresearch was to identify proteins in the root tipsinduced as a result of AI stress. Seeds of a near-isogenic pair of sorghum lines were genninated forthree days in water and pIaced in a nutrientsolutionwith zero and 60 IlM AI for 96 hours. Root tips (1.5mm) were excised, ground with 6.8 pH bufferextraction solution in a I: I proportion and centri-fuged at 120,000g. The pellet was resuspended insample buffer. The material was run on an SDS-PAGE gel eIectrophoresis. The results indicate for-mation of a protein band at approximateIy 95 KDin the root tips with AI stress. The band was notobserved in the root tips without AI stress. Theseresults indicated that proteins are induced in themicrosomal membrane fraction ofthe root tip underAI stress.
