Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Departamento de Microbiologia,36571-000, Viçosa, MG, Brazil.Isolates of non pathogenic endophytic bacteria were recovered fromcultivars of healthy maize leaves at Embrapa Milho e Sorgo, Sete Lagoas,MG, Brazil. Cuttings of surface sterilized leaves were placed on selectiveplating medium and the isolates were recovered. Pure cultures of isolateswere reinoculated in seeds and maize leaves to evaluate the capacity ofleaves tissue colonization from the seeds and pathogenic effects. Nonpathogenic isolates were morphologic and biochemically characterized.From 632 isolates originally recovered from maize leave plants, 64,3% wererecovered from leaf vascular tissue and 35,7% were recovered from leaftissue. Fourteen isolates from 160 endophytes were reisolated in the leavesafter seed inoculation and pathogenic effects were not observed frorn thesereisolates. The greatest number of isolates frorn leaf vascular tissue indicatesthat endophytic bacteria have intimate relationship with xylem tissues andhas been shown to spread systemically throughout maize plants. In addition,their uni que ability to survive inside plants makes them potencial candidatesfor biological control of maize pests throught the systemic delivery ofbiopesticide.3292 BRESSAN
