As with any newposition, there was an on-going processof familiarisation and learning to beundertaken, and my employer encour-aged a self-directed approach to both mywork and development. I have, perhaps,become a typical academic, with a variedstring of vague ‘interests’ and activities.However, I remain a registered ODP andto that end, I have to maintain both myStandards of Proficiency (HPC, 2004) andthose required for continuing profession-al development (CPD). I therefore needto ensure that my professional develop-ment activities meet the criteria outlinedin the HPC publication: ContinuingProfessional Development and YourRegistration (HPC, 2006).July 2008 is the scheduled random auditcommencement for ODP (HPC, 2006) [pdf.version p.4]. Only the preceding twoyears will be assessed in regard to CPD[p.5], so I will be looking at activities anddevelopment from July 2006 onwards.This ensures that my development iscurrent and on-going, and that I am notsimply relying on a qualification gainedback in my distant past. I will beexpected to complete a formatted CPDprofile, and to ‘state how my CPD hasmet the five Standards’ required. This willbe sent to me if I am selected for audit.In addition, I will be required to providean account of how I have planned andrecorded my CPD, with limited ‘support-ing evidence’ of my activities.Evidence must include a ‘summary of allactivities undertaken’ and a table formatwill be used for this. Although HPCsuggest that it includes the date andtype of activity, I also aim to include abrief indication of how each activitymeets Standards 3 and 4. This will helpCPD assessors to understand both myCPD approach, and also how this relatesto my practice and those who are‘affected by my work’ (service users)[p.7]. It will also help me to reflect onhow I have developed over the two-yearperiod, allowing me to consider mycurrent and future working practice. Theresulting table will need to be conciseand easy to follow (see Table 1).My own CPD record is held on computer.Most of the evidence is held as Word,PowerPoint or pdf Files. I havesummarised my activities into aPowerPoint format, and use this as aworking journal, appraisal record and atool for professional activities whenworking with new groups or organisa-tions. In order to keep it ‘evidencebased’, I can add supporting evidence inthe form of e-mail copies, links, imagesand media footage, as well as textnarrative. This helps me to summarise acombination of complex material, withoutthe need for ‘War and Peace’. Few thingsnow exist only in hard-copy format, and Ihave even scanned my originaldocuments and qualifications to file, withthe originals safely packed away. Iregularly create a back-up copy, in case ofa technical error or computer failure.Although HPC will not ask to see my‘CPD record’ [p.5], I want my profile to bea true reflection of the activities I haveundertaken. Therefore, I have chosen toindicate how each item is backed up withevidenced and/or recorded in my personalrecord. It will include all activities thathave contributed towards my CPD. Forme, this will be quite a lengthy compila-tion. In addition to taking on a new career,I have also undertaken formal study andresearch work. These requirements are coveredin Standards 3 and 4 [p.6,7]. Conveyingthis information in a concise manner willbe a challenging task because what isneeded is a summary of my activities,not a complex piece of writing that isdifficult to understand.Much of what we do in our professionalemployment we take for granted andthis is perhaps the most difficult area ofCPD to support with evidence. ‘Appendix1 : examples of CPD activities’ (HPC 2006[p.23]) highlights areas of work-basedlearning and professional activity thatmay be inherent in your role, yet stillcontribute to your CPD. The entry inExample 1a is used to acknowledge this,although it is by no means conclusive,and it will need to be supported byspecific additional activity. I have usedthe same wording to describe myactivity type, as used in the HPCdocument. In addition to giving a clearformat for assessment, this will alsohelp me to ensure a range of activitiesare supported with evidence, andhighlight areas for future development.Formal study is an important part ofCPD, and the relevance of the subject orqualification may be demonstrably linkedto your service/practice. On its ownhowever, recording a degree or course,would not show how development hasimproved my work, or been of benefit toothers. In the example (Example 1b), Iundertook some research studies, tosupplement my teaching practice. Theaward itself is evidence that I undertookthe study and achieved its requirements.However, I also cite materials I haveFeature — CPDdelivered, that give an example of howthe learning has been used. I havepublished a related article in a peer-reviewed journal, which may help showhow learning has been made availableto a wider professional body. Provisionof a reference would allow an assessorto access this if they wished to do so.Appropriate issues can be expandedupon within the written profilestatement, in order to address thespecific questions involved withStandards 3 and 4 [p.17,18]. I wouldperhaps cover the way in which mystudy has improved the effectiveness ofmy work, and how it has led to changesin my working approach [p.18]. Following an initialperiod of familiarisation in my new role, Iadopted an ‘action research’ approach. Inthis, I constantly evaluated areas of mypractice and sought formal and informalfeedback from all of those involved(referred to as ‘360° feedback’). In mysituation, this included peers andcolleagues, students, the ODP profession,wider medical professional groups, andthose involved in working partnerships. Iwas then able to confirm that my currentpractice was valid and identify any areasfor improvement and development. Thisallowed me to undertake study andresearch to improve my knowledge,change or adapt my working methodsand acknowledge any areas for personalor professional improvement. Evidence isheld in the form of e-mails, question-naires and related surveys andpublication feedback. When used in staffappraisal, my line-manager is able to gaina concise view of my performance todate, which helps to support areas forfuture development. (See Example 1c.)My new role has been a sharedlearning experience with all thoseinvolved, giving rise to a host of devel-opment opportunities. Membership ofspecialist groups and professionalbodies, volunteer work, either within theuniversity or on an international level,research and working group participa-tion and academic writing andpublication, to name but a few. Each oneof these activities will need to be clearlyidentified and established as beingrelevant to both my practice and thestandards set for CPD. The CPDprofile is a simple form. It requires astatement of how my CPD activity over thelast two years meets the published HPCstandards. Therefore, I have to have aclear picture of what I have undertakenand a clear understanding of what isrequired. A summary of my activities isrequired, so I intend to include a table,similar to that shown. Each entry will havea brief but concise rationale, that uses thelanguage and descriptions contained inthe standards (where possible). Mysupplied evidence will include selectedexamples of my work and activities. UsingAppendix 1 [p.23] as an index, I will addthe profile # from my table, and select asingle example of each type, which clearlyshows how standards 3 and 4 have beenmet. This will be presented in a simpleindexed file.ODPs are employed in a wide range ofsettings, including clinical, managerial andeducational roles. CPD activity should notonly help to enable your continued regis-tration, but also help to improve andstructure your working practice. If treatedas a ‘tool’ as opposed to a ‘test’, then itcan help improve the professional devel-opment of you as an individual, and theservice that you deliver.
