Community structure of the Ieram polychaete reef andtrophic connections to inshore fishes and shorebirdsThe occurrence of polychaete reefs had been observed on the Jeram shore,Selangor coast in the 1980s. The objectives of this study are to investigate thecommunity structure of the polychaete reefs and associated benthic communitieswithin reef aggregations and reef-free areas. Polychaetes belonging to 6 familieshave been identified, however, two species of sedentary polychaetes theSpionidae and Sabellariidae were dominant. Associated macrofauna observed inthe reetlets are Gastropoda (Nassarius spp.), Bivalvia (Anadara granosa),Anomura (hermit crabs) and Ophiuroidea. The Jeram shore is a popular feedingsite for resident and migrant birds. The reefs appear to experience periodicalsedimentation by fine sediments and subsequent exposure, and had been thesubject of study by geologists. Thi.s study .also prop~ses to invest~gate thetrophic connections of the shorebirds during low tide and subtidal fishcommunites during high tide.SCS 2012, University of Malaya
