Effect of food deprivation and re-feeding on the hematological and biochemistry variables and composition of white muscle of cachama blanca Piaractus brachypomus during final phase of commercial production system

Abstract

Los ciclos climáticos, las migraciones como estrategia reproductiva o simplemente la falta de disponibilidad de alimento son factores que llevan a diferentes especies de peces tanto en su medio ambiente como en cautiverio a enfrentar periodos de ayuno o restricción alimenticia. El propósito del presente trabajo, fue medir la respuesta en la etapa final de un sistema de producción comercial de cachama blanca Piaractus brachypomus, bajo diferentes protocolos de restricción alimenticia y posterior realimentación, a través de variables sanguíneas, glucógeno hepático y composición del músculo blanco. Por un periodo de 12 semanas y bajo condiciones normales de producción en estanques de tierra, se seleccionaron y dividieron algunos ejemplares de cachama blanca en tres grupos, el primero de ellos identificado como el grupo control fue alimentado de manera convencional (todos los días); el segundo, denominado como el grupo de restricción moderada fue alimentado por tres días y restringido por dos días de manera consecutiva hasta la semana 10, seguido por 2 semanas de alimentación convencional; el tercero, denominado el grupo de restricción severa tuvo una restricción alimenticia completa de 6 semanas, seguidas de 6 semanas de realimentación. Al finalizar el periodo de restricción no se observaron cambios en las variables hematológicas que pudieran indicar una alteración en el bienestar animal; mientras que los niveles de glucosa y triglicéridos en plasma, glucógeno hepático y lípidos en músculo del grupo de restricción severa presentaron diferencias significativas (p0,05) respecto al grupo control, señalando que hubo una movilización de reservas corporales necesarias para cubrir la demanda energética. Sin embargo, una vez iniciado el periodo de realimentación se observó una rápida recuperación en dichas variables. Por otro lado, el grupo de restricción moderada no mostró respuestas que indicaran un cambio significativo en su metabolismo respecto al grupo control. Al finalizar el ensayo no se observaron diferencias entre los grupos restringidos y el grupo control que indicaran un perjuicio en el estatus de salud o de composición muscular. / Abstract. Climate cycles, spawning migrations or just lack of food availability are factors that lead to different fish species in both their environment and in captivity to deal with periods of fasting or food deprivation. The aim of this paper was measure the response in final phase of commercial production system of the cachama blanca Piaractus brachypomus, under different protocols of feed restriction and subsequent re-feeding, through blood variables, liver glycogen and composition of white muscle. During twelve weeks under normal production conditions in earthen pounds, were selected and divided some specimens of cachama blanca into three groups, the first one was identified as the control group that it was fed normally (every day); the second one was named as moderate restriction group, this group was fed during three days and then restricted during two days consecutively until week number 10, followed by two weeks of normal feeding; the third one, identified as severe restriction group had complete feed restriction during six weeks, followed by six weeks of re-feeding. At the end of the restriction period, it did not show changes in hematological variables that might indicate a disturbance in animal welfare; while the plasma glucose and triglycerides levels, hepatic glycogen and white muscle lipid of severe restriction group, showed significant differences (p0.05) in comparison with the control group, indicating there was a mobilization of reserves for covering the energetic demand. However, once the re-feeding period was started it presented a fast recuperation of above variables mentioned. On the other hand, moderate restriction group did not show responses that might indicate a significant change in their metabolism in comparison with the control group. At the end of the experiment did not present differences among the restricted groups and the control group that would indicate a deleterious of the health status or muscle composition.Magister en producción animal.
