Apoidea, Acamptopoeum, taxonomía, Andes, Colombia.INTRODUCTIONBees in the tribe Calliopsini (Andrenidae,Panurginae) are very diverse and abundant intemperate areas of North and South America,especially xeric areas, but nearly absent topoorly represented in the wet tropics(Michener 2000). The Calliopsini genusAcamptopoeum Cockerell is widely spread inSouth America, ranging from Argentina andChile to Colombia (Michener 2000). Speciesof this genus resemble Calliopsis s. str. Smithfrom which they can be separated by the innerorbits converging below, labrum with strongtransverse salient, bands of setae onpremarginal areas of metasomal terga(sometimes absent in males), middle tibial spurof females coarsely toothed and stingsurpassing stylus, truncate at apex (Ruz 1991).As in other Calliopsini, nests ofAcamptopoeum are built in flat ground, usuallyin barren areas well exposed to sun; nests areshallow with meandering tunnels and lateralsthat lead to single subhorizontal cells; lateralsare soil-filled after cell closure (Rozen &Yanega 1999). There are eight describedCaldasia 26(1) 2004: 239-243240Acamptopoeum from Colombiaspecies in Acamptopoeum which can beeffectively separated using Shinn’s (1965) key.In Colombia, Acamptopoeum species arerarely collected and practically absent incollections; to date, two species have beenreported: A. submetallicum (Spinola, 1851)and A. colombiensis Shinn, 1965, the latteronly known from the type specimens collectedin northern Colombia (Ciénaga and SantaMarta, Magdalena) (Shinn 1965, Smith-Pardo2003). Herein, I describe a new species ofAcamptopoeum from a high xeric area in theEastern Andes of Colombia and report A.prinii (Holmberg 1884) as new to the country.MATERIALS  AND  METHODSThe morphological description andillustrations were made using an Olympus SZmicroscope. The description format andmorphological terminology generally followRuz (1991) and terminology for surfacesculpturing follows Harris (1979). Setae lengthis given relative to the diameter of medianocellus. The abbreviations F, S, OD, and T areused for flagellomere, metasomal sternum,ocellar diameter, and metasomal tergum,respectively. The novelty of the speciesdescribed here was confirmed by comparisonwith specimens of other Acamptopoeumspecies deposited at Snow EntomologicalCollection, Entomology Division, NaturalHistory Museum, University of Kansas,Lawrence, Kansas, USA.RESULTSAcamptopoeum fernandezi González, newspeciesDiagnosis. This species can be recognizedby the black integument without blue or greenreflections and the short, sparse and mainlywhite pubescence on the body, not formingapical bands of setae on metasoma.Description. Male. Body length 7.69 mm;forewing length 5.69 mm. Head 1.5 times aswide as long; inner orbits converging below;interalveolar distance as broad as interocellardistance, slightly broader than alveolorbitaldistance; ocellocular distance about threetimes greater than median ocellus diameter;ocelloccipital distance about as broad asinterocellar distance and about three timesgreater than distance between median tolateral ocellus; compound eye twice as longas wide; clypeus projecting about one thirdof compound eye width in lateral view; genaslightly broader than half of compound eyewidth in profile; antennal flagellum about 0.8times length head width; scape three timeslonger than broad, F1–F3 as broad as long,individually about same length and width;frontal line with upper part in a shallow groove,lower part (little more than half of total length)a well-marked carina reaching interalveolararea. Genitalia and associated sterna as in Fig.1A–B, D–F. Coloration. Mainly black, exceptfor the following parts yellow: anterior face ofscape, outer surface of flagellum yellowish(inner surface dark brown); clypeus, exceptfor apical margin dark brown and two brownspots on disc, supraclypeal area, subantennalarea, and lower paraocular area, on latterprogressively tapering towards vertex, endingjust above antennal socket, base of labrumand about two thirds of outer surface ofmandible (Fig. 1C), and apex of dorsal surfaceof front and middle femora. Outer surface offront tibia, except for a diffuse spot in centerand posterior margin dark brown; middle tibiawith a yellow spot on base and along anteriormargin; front basitarsus with outer surfaceyellow, middle basitarsus yellowish on baseand apex of outer surface; mediotarsi, distitarsiand pretarsal claws of all legs ferrugineous,lighter on front legs. Tegula with disctranslucent brownish, dark brown to black oninner margin. Wings translucent ferruginouswith weak coppery-green highlights, veinsdark brown. Apical margin of T1–T5 (more241Gonzalezconspicuous on T5) and sterna translucentbrownish. Pubescence. Mainly white and verysparse. Apical margin of labrum with long (>OD), stout, simple ferruginous setae; clypeus,lower paraocular area, subantennal area andfrons with long (> 2 OD), sparse, minutelybranched white setae, longest on latter; scapewith long ferruginous setae, twice as long asmaximum diameter of scape; ocellar area andvertex mostly with short (= OD), sparseferruginous setae, longest setae (> OD) alongpreoccipital ridge; gena with long (> 2 OD),sparse whitish setae, longest on lower gena.Mesosoma with long (about 2 OD), sparse,branched white setae as on gena, denser onanterolateral sides of mesoscutum and ventralside of mesepisternum, disc of mesoscutummostly bare. Front and middle tibiae and tarsiwith ferruginous setae, hind tibia and tarsiwith whitish to pale ferruginous setae. T1–T5with short (about half OD), semierect,branched, sparse ferruginous setae, longeston T1; apical margin of T1–T5 with very short,adpressed, sparse branched whitish setae,without forming conspicuous apical bands ofsetae. S1 with long (about 2 OD), sparse,branched whitish setae; S2–S5 with long (>OD), sparse ferruginous setae, longer towardsapical margin, except medioapical margin ofS3–S5 bare. Punctation. Head withintegument smooth and shiny betweenpunctures. Clypeus and lower paraocular areawith faint punctures, separated by 1–2puncture widths as on gena, closer andstronger towards clypeal base as onsubantennal area; stronger and almostcontiguous on frons and vertex; facial foveaabout twice as long as broad (length > OD),barely indicated by a shallow, smooth,depressed area. Anterolateral sides ofmesoscutum with finer punctures, almostcontiguous; disc of mesoscutum, metanotumand scutellum with scattered punctures (1–2puncture widths); mesepisternum with sparserpunctures than mesoscutum (2–3 puncturewidths), ventral side with integument weaklyimbricate between punctures as on legs, sternaand lateral sides of terga. Metasomal tergawith fine and close punctures (= 1 puncturewidths), integument between puncturessmooth and shiny; premarginal areas of tergaand sterna with sparser punctures, 2–3puncture widths.Holotype.   , COLOMBIA. The specific name is a patronymichonoring Fernando Fernández, UniversidadNacional de Colombia (Bogotá), for all hisefforts in promoting the study of Colombia’sHymenoptera fauna.COMMENTS. The new species runs to couple 6in the Shinn’s (1965) key to species and thereruns out to the widespread A. prinii. However,the new species differs from A. prinii, besidesthe characters given in the diagnosis, by theshape of the dorsal projection of thegonocoxite in the genitalia. In A. fernandezithis projection is somewhat pointed (apicalangle about 45°), almost digitiform (Fig. 1G)whereas in A. prinii such projection has amore rectangular shape (60°) (Fig. 1H). Inaddition, the pigidial area of T6 in A. prinii islaterally covered with dense, branched, short,adpressed and mostly ferruginous setae thanin A. fernandezi.A. fernandezi occurs in a xeric area of theEastern Andes; such environments areinteresting because they represent“biogeographic islands” usually separatedfrom one another by expanses of cloud forestsand they are likely to contain a diverse fauna,according to Michener’s hypothesis(Michener 1979) on high bee diversity inwarm-temperate and xeric areas of the world.♂242Acamptopoeum from ColombiaFig. 1.
