Aborda-se o resumo estruturado enquanto recurso na disseminação da produção científica da área da Saúde, examinam-se os principais documentos que orientam a sua elaboração e verifica-se a coincidência entre o discurso e a prática deste tipo de resumo na área analisada. Trata-se de uma abordagem qualitativa, formalizada em duas estratégias: (i) revisão seletiva da literatura especializada nos Estados Unidos da América, nomeadamente da norma ANSI/NISO Z39.14-1997 e dos princípios estabelecidos pelo Ad Hoc Working Group for Critical Appraisal of the Medical Literature, International Committee of Medical Journal Editors e pela National Library of Medicine (ii) estudo de caso da aplicação do resumo estruturado nos títulos correntes da SciELO Portugal, focalizado nas “Instruções aos autores” e nos fascículos publicados no primeiro e no último ano disponíveis. Os principais resultados revelam uma aplicação razoável do formato estruturado no conjunto dos artigos originais ou de revisão (47,91%) publicados nos números do último ano analisado, realçando o desempenho de dois títulos (20%), que atingiram valores entre 90 e 100%. No conjunto dos casos clínicos publicados no mesmo período, a aplicação do resumo estruturado é menos expressiva (28,84%), destacando-se dois títulos (33,33%), pela total conformidade com este aspeto. Comparativamente, os números globais do último ano representam uma pequena elevação (artigos científicos, 7,1%; casos clínicos, 5,79%) em relação ao primeiro ano analisado. Como principal conclusão recomenda-se um maior envolvimento dos editores e dos árbitros, quer para incluírem o resumo estruturado nas instruções aos autores, quer para zelarem pela sua aplicação nos manuscritos submetidos.This study addresses the structured abstract as a resource in the dissemination of scientific production of Health Sciences and aims to examine the key documents that guide its design and verify the coincidence between the discourse and the practice of this type of resume in the analyzed area. This is a qualitative approach, formalized in two strategies: (i) selective review of the literature in the United States, including the ANSI / NISO Z39.14-1997 and the principles established by the Ad Hoc Working Group for Critical Appraisal of the Medical Literature, International Committee of Medical Journal Editors and the National Library of Medicine, (ii) and a case study regarding the application of the structured abstract of Health Sciences current titles in SciELO Portugal, focused on the "Instructions to authors" and issues published in the first and last available years. The main results show a reasonable application of the structured format in the set of original and review articles (47,91%) published in the last analyzed year, highlighting the performance of two titles (20%) which reached values between 90 and 100%. In all of the clinical trials published in the same period, the application of the structured abstract is less expressive (28,84%), highlighting the performance of two titles (33,33%), by the total compliance with this aspect. As main conclusion, we recommend greater involvement of editors and referees in this process, whether to include a structured abstract in the instructions to authors, either to look after their application in manuscripts accepted for publication
