In biophysicsand biology, optical sensing and manipulation of cells havestrengthened understanding of basic cell function. Togetherwith improved laser therapeutic techniques, optical sensingand cell manipulation form the basis for the increased interestin biophotonics. Throughout Europe, the United States, andthe rest of the world, major research centers are highly activein this field that in a broad sense may be labeled biophotonics.Therefore, education within this area is becoming increasinglyimportant.The main purpose with the biennial graduate summerschool is to provide education within biophotonics for studentsand young scientists at the highest international level. Our aimis to attract internationally renowned researchers as lecturerswho would in turn attract the most talented young researchersworldwide in the field of biophotonics.2 Format of the Biophotonics GraduateSummer SchoolThe school mainly targets graduate students and postdoctoralfellows from around the world. The format of the school is acombination of lectures and student poster presentations,with time between lectures for discussions and exchangeof scientific ideas. The lecturers cover one topic in a full ses-sion comprised of four lectures, which thoroughly covers thebasics and state of the art of each topic. On one hand, thischoice limits the number of topics taught at each school.On the other hand, the topics selected for the schools arecovered in detail. Therefore, the range of topics taught willchange from year to year.An important feature of the school format is that studentsand lecturers spend the entire week together, which providesexcellent opportunities for the exchange of scientific ideas,networking, and socializing.The 7th International Graduate Summer SchoolBiophotonics ‘15 covered the basics of lasers as well assupercontinuum sources and their application in medicine,tissue optics, photodynamic therapy, optical tweezers andtheir applications in biophotonics, optical biosensors, diffuseoptical and molecular imaging, fluorescence nanoscopy, opti-cal coherence tomography, and coherent Raman scatteringmicroscopy.1 In addition, the topic of entrepreneurship andtranslating ideas into applications that eventually becomeproducts was included.3 Special Section in the Journal ofBiomedical OpticsWe are pleased to introduce the contributions to thisspecial section on “Selected Topics in Biophotonics:Photoacoustic Tomography and Fiber-Based Lasers andSupercontinuum Sources” comprised of two invited tutorialpapers and seven contributed papers, mainly from theparticipants of the school but also from other researchers inthe field. Not all the contributions are strictly covered by thetitle of the special section, but all of the contributions reflectthe core topics of the school and span the fields of biomedicaloptics and biophotonics. The invited papers are:• Y. Zhou, J. Yao, and L. V. Wang, “Tutorial on photo-acoustic tomography”• J. R. Taylor, “Tutorial on fiber-based sources for biopho-tonic applications”These two papers from lecturers at the school are tutorial incharacter and provide an excellent background to the fields ofphotoacoustic tomography, while also pointing to future chal-lenges and fiber-based supercontinuum sources that have aplethora of applications within our field. These invited papersprovide a natural continuation to previous tutorial papers onthe foundation of diffuse optics,2 imaging thick tissues with dif-fuse optics,3 molecular imaging,4 optical micromanipulation,5© 2016 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE)Journal of Biomedical Optics 061001-1 June 2016 • Vol. 21(6)Special Section Guest EditorialDownloaded From: http://biomedicaloptics.spiedigitallibrary.org/ on 07/13/2016 Terms of Use: http://spiedigitallibrary.org/ss/TermsOfUse.aspxphotodynamic therapy,6 optical coherence tomography,7 andbiological imaging with coherent Raman scattering micros-copy8 published in similar special sections from previousschools. These papers all belong to a planned series oftutorial review papers from each biennial school that providehigh-level, open-access educational material for the benefit ofthe scientific community and, in addition, fulfill our own moti-vation for creating the school in the first place. With this spe-cial section, there are in total nine excellent tutorials thatprovide profound introduction into the basics of our field.Following the invited review papers, we will discuss thecontributed papers according to their main topic, startingwith papers on the same general theme as one of the tutorialpapers. Related to the topic of photoacoustics, Lin et al.describe tomography of myoglobin oxygen saturation anddemonstrate its potential in vivo in mice. Deng and Li demon-strate in vivo measurements of oxygen saturation in humansubjects (fingers). Related to supercontinuum sources (andphotoacoustics), Bondu et al. describe a new realization ofa fiber-based supercontinuum source that can be appliedwithin photoacoustic microscopy. Given the source specifica-tions, it is interesting for other applications as well; hence itmight be useful for multimodal approaches.Another general area covered at the school and in pastspecial sections is Raman spectroscopy.8 Tamosaityte et al.investigate inflammation-related alterations of lipids afterspinal cord injury by combining several methods, includingRaman spectroscopy, coherent anti-Stokes Raman scatter-ing, and two-photon fluorescence microscopy. Alfonso-García et al. investigate D38-cholesterol as a Raman probeusing hyperspectral stimulated Raman scattering and multi-variate analysis. Their results might lead to new understand-ing of cholesterol movement and distribution in cells.In biophotonics, reflectance measurements2 and fluores-cence measurement both play a major role. Fluoresceinsodium and aminolevulinic acid–induced protoporphyrin IXcan be used for contrasting malign and benign tissues.Bravo et al. develop a mathematical model for correctingreflectance spectral measurements obtained in the presenceof strong fluorescence, demonstrated experimentally in phan-toms. Their investigation represents a first step toward usingquantitative optical spectroscopy to guide surgeries throughsimultaneous assessment of two contrast agents.Finally, linking OCT7 and the present tutorial on supercon-tinnum sources, Yao et al. demonstrate an ultrahigh-resolu-tion spectral domain OCT system and apply it for myocardialimaging. He has more than 20 years ofresearch experience in developing optical techniques to assist indiagnostic and therapeutic applications within medicine. Since 2003,he has co-organized the biannual International Graduate SummerSchool Biophotonics, held at the Isle of Hven, Sweden. He is aneditorial board member of the Journal of Biomedical Optics andJournal of Biophotonics, respectively.Peter E. Andersen is senior scientist and research professor at theTechnical University of Denmark, where he leads research within bio-medical optics. He has more than 15 years of research experiencewith light sources for biomedical optics and optical coherence tomog-raphy systems and their application. Since 2003, he has co-organizedthe biannual International Graduate Summer School Biophotonics,held at the Isle of Hven, Sweden.
