A recently synthesized herbicide Aquathol K was tested on the water weed Hydrilla verticil.

Results from the laboraoty tests indicated that Aquathol K with concentrations ranging from 1.0 mg/l

to 2.0 mg/l can kill this weed. EVidently, 100% injury was achieved within 10 days for the plants treated

with the highest concentration., 2. 0 mg/l of Aquathol K. The rate of 100% injury was recorded much

slower with 1.0 mg/l. With lower concentration O.Smg/1 and 0.1 mg/l, 100% injury was never achieved

within 25 days. Therefore, the herbicide was not very effective at lower concentrations

Therefore, the herbicide was not very effective at lower concentrations.INTRODUCTIONHydrilla is a submerged aquatic weed and accord-ing to Hiller (I978) it originated from CentralAfrica. Currently, this weed has spread widelyto most countries in the tropics and is known tocause severe problems in waterways.Accordings to Mahler (I 979), hydrilla isconsidered to be the number one problem inFloridian waterways. In Peninsular Malaysia, itis a menace to irrigation and drainage canalsparticularly in rice growing areas (Mansor, 1985).Evidently, works on the problems caused byhydrilla to the aquatic ecosystem are well docu-mented, particularly from several Southern Statesof the United States of America (Steward andVan, 1987).Aquathol K is an aquatic herbicide manu-factured by Penwalt Corporation, Philadelphia,USA. This herbicide is approved for use in watersystems by the United States EnvironmentalProtection Agency (Registration no. 4581-204).It constitutes active gradient dipotassium salt ofendonthall 40.3% and inert ingredients 59.7%.According to Reiner and Rogers (1986), thepotassium salt exhibits lower organism toxicityand is much preferred to other herbicides incontrolling the aquatic weeds, particularly at thelocalities where fish population density is relative-ly high. Furthermore, there is no economicalalternative method which is efective enough toovercome the massive infestation of this un-desirable weeds particularly in the waterways oftropical countries.MATERIALS AND METHODSSeveral colonies of fresh and healthy hydrillaplants were collected from Manatee Springs,Chiefland, Florida. Plants were cut from theapical tips approximately 15 cm in length. The base of stem was placed in 90% pottingsoils and covered with 10% sand. Each pot wasthen placed in a jar containing 3.8 liter of tapwater (pH - 8). Fifteen jars were used for alltreatments.After two weeks, except for the control,the jars were treated accordingly with AquatholK at concentrations of 0.1 mg/1, 0.5 mg/ I,1.0 mg/I and 2.0 mg/I respectively. Each treat-ment was replicated three times. The experimentwas conducted in a growth chamber with aconstant water temperature (250C + 10C) anda photo-period of 14 light and 10 dark hours.Initial fresh weights were measured fromseveral lengths of similar plants and the datawere used to calculate the initial dry weightsof the experimental plants. For dry weights,the plants were left in a constant temperaturecabinet (Blue M) at ,SoC for 24 hours. Visualobservation on the effect of the herbicides onhydrilla was made every five days (recorded %injury). A rating scale of 0-100% was used inwhich 0 = no effect and 100% = completekill.RESULTSHydrilla verticil/ata harvested from ManateeSpring were robust and healthy. They were foundgrowing at more than 50 cm (length). Figure 1shows the effect of various concentrations ofAquathol K on Hydrilla verticilla. With 2 mg/ I,50% injury was observed in 5 days. However,only 70% injury was recorded for 0.5 mg/I withno 100% kill at this concentration. Slight injury(about 5% to 10%) was observed for 0.1 mg/IAquathol K.Figure 2 shows the comparative measure-ments of dry weights of the plants after beingtreated for 25 days with the four concentrationsof the herbicide. It seemed that there was anincrease in weights for the 0.1 mg/I treatedplants. However, for the treatments with 2 mg/Iand mg/I Aquathol K, it significant reductionin dry weights was observed.DISCUSSION\008Q~'602':;4020Fig. I The effect of various concentrations ofaquathol- kon Hydrilla verticillata (mean value ofnine readings)According to Blackburn and Weldon (1970),only 37 herbicides out of 800 herbicides evaluatedin the laboratory warranted further field evalua-tion for controlling aquatic weeds. In their ex-periments with hydrilla, they recorded 100%injury or complete kill after two weeks of treat-ment with 5 mg/I and 10 mg/I of endothall.These concentrations were relatively high com·pared with the concentrations used in this experi-ment. Figure 1 shows that within 10 days, 100%injury was recorded for the plants treated with2 mg/I of Aquathol K. With I mg/I, the 100%injury level was achieved at a slower rate; it tookabout 20 days. Evidently, with the lower con-centrations, the 100% injury was not achievedand in fact with 0.1 mg/I, the plants were able tosurvive and subsequently increase in weight.PERTANIKA VOL. 11 0.2, 1988 193MASHHOR MANSOR, JOSEPH JOYCE AND DAN THYERFedtke (1982) stated that the use of low herbicideconcentrations which do not immediately kill theplants, will give sufficient time for the plant toadopt itself. After several days the treated plantwill be able to resume its normal growth. There-fore, using lower concentrations of herbicidesin controlling the aquatic weeds will not bring anyresult. On the other hand, if too high a concen-tration is used, the detrimental effect on the over-all aquatic ecosystems are normally unavoidable. Aprecise concentration with a minimal effect onenvironment is generally recommended.From the analysis of the variance of thedata, it can be concluded that there is no dif-ference in plants' injuries batween the concen-tration of 1 mg/l and 2 mg/l p >0.05). It appearsthat 1 mg/ 1 of Aquathol K. was sufficient tokill the plant.According to Reinert et al (1986), the usageof this herbicide in natural water will result inrapid biotransformation and biodegration. There-fore, it can be considered a non-persitent her-bicide. A biotransformation half-life of 8.45 dayscoupled with dilution, dispersion and otherdynamic rate processess that occur in an aquaticenvironment, suggest that endothall could beapplied in an aquatic environment where water-used is quite critical.Although this herbicide has been widelytested in tha laborataries and also in the fields indeveloped countries (Frank and Comes, 1967;Yeo, 1970; Sikka and Saxena, 1973; Sikka andRice, 1973; Rodgers et al 1983 and Steward andVan, 1987) there are relatively few works doneon the usage of this herbicide in third worldcountries.
