Working students preferlong-distance learning• By Michael Sun~TOTAL of 10,386graduates receivedtheirscrollsin threeonvocationsatUni-versitiPutraMalaysia(UPM)thisyear."Eachyear:UPM holds15sessionsto conferacademicscrolls," said Chek ZanKasah UPM senior deputyregistrar. ."Overthreedayscommen-cingon a Saturdayfor eachof theconvocations,fivece-remonial sessions ofthree-hour durations eachwere conducted,"she ad-ded.In July, 4,092 graduatesreceivedtheir scrollsin thesecondconvocation.In the third convocationlastmonth,3,138graduatesreceivedtheirscrolls.Razik Hussein MohamedGanny,who graduatedwitha Bachelorof ComputerSci-encewith a major in soft-ware engineering,receivedthehighestaward:Chancel-lor'sGoldAward.This was followed byMuhamadNor Asnawi Saa-man,aBachelorofAccount-ancygraduate,andAng LeyPoh, a Bachelorof Sciencegraduatewith amajorin bi-otechnology, who wereawardedtheAnugerahPela-jaran DiRaja.Four key officialspresideover convocationceremon-ies.They are UPM chancel-lor SultanSharafuddinIdrisShahofSelangor,pro-chan-cellors Tan Sri Thong YawHongandTan Sri Dr NayanAriffm and Vice-ChancellorProfessorDr MuhamadZo-hadieBardaie."More women than mengraduate,"ChekZanadded."Thisproportionis a ratioof 60 women to 40 men.However, more men thanwomengraduatein the en-gineering vocations," shesaid. The proportion forgraduates in science andtechnology as comparedwith graduatesin thesocialscienceswas also 60 to 40,shesaid.There is also a growingtrend amongworking stu-dents to choose long-dis-tancelearning at UPM. "In2004 there were 1,162graduatesin the long-dis-tanceprogrammeandofthisnumber1,142graduatedinSeptember,"sheadded.They had undertakenfirst-degreeprogrammesinROYAL TOUCH:SultanSharafuddinwithUPM's topgraduates.Linguistics, Arts, Commu-nication,Scienceand Edu-cation majoring in coun-selling.For part-time executiveprogrammes,52 graduateswere from the Faculty ofModern Languages while252graduatedfromtheFac-ultyofEconomics.Fortheyearasawhole,97graduates received theirDoctor of Philosophy and1,272 master's degrees.Also, 7,826includingthosein thelong-distanceandex-ecutive programmes ob-tained their first-degreesand1,191receiveddiplomasatUPM convocations.
