Abstract
This study explores the interpretation of the concept of the modern artist in the work of the catalan contemporary author Enrique Vila-Matas.Therefore, it will focus on his novel El mal de Montano (2002). This paper aims to emphasize the representations of the artist and to examine the conception of his identity in this book as well as in the other two novels Bartleby y compañía (2002) and Doctor Pasavento (2005), which all have been subsumed in a trilogy
with the title “la catedral metaliteraria” (the metaliterary cathedral). The article assumes a similarity between the concept of the modern artist and the periodization made by Peter V. Zima (2008), which considers postmodern art as a provisional ending of an evolution that began with the revolutionary movements of the seventeenth
and eighteenth century
