Their novelty, however, connects them tightly. Theappearance of these two issues has, on one hand, required andpromoted a renewal of the perspective in addiction scienceand, on the other hand, could facilitate the rethinking of prac-tical, therapeutic, and preventive interventions. Thus, bothareas share a main common aspect: they raise new issues thatneed to be addressed in the field of addictions and, as such,force us to reconsider former approaches.One of the focuses is the emergence of novel psychoactivesubstances, especially in relation to the fast moving and thepotentially unlimited nature of their online market [1]. A“novel psychoactive substance” has been legally defined bythe European Union as a new narcotic or psychotropic drug,either in pure form or in a preparation, that is not scheduledunder the Single Convention onNarcotic Drugs of 1961 or theConvention on Psychotropic Substances of 1971, but whichmay pose a public health threat comparable to substanceslisted in the above-mentioned conventions (Council of theEuropean Union decision 2005/387/JHA) (UNODC, 2014).From the psychedelic movements of the 1960s until thebeginning of the 21st century, there was hardly any changeregarding the most used drugs. In addition to cannabis,heroin, and cocaine, primarily LSD and, to a lesser extent,magic mushrooms among hallucinogenic drugs and amphet-amine basically covered the significant range of substances ofabuse. Although the presence of ecstasy from the end of the1980s had brought some moderate changes, it can be statedthat researchers and prevention and treatment professionalscould work in a relatively stable environment throughoutdecades. Users basically used the same drugs and sought helpfor similar problems, and therefore studies could systemati-cally grow and support the preventive and clinical efforts.The novel psychoactive substances, however, that beganto spread after the millennium [2–4] have fundamentallyreorganized this apparently stable situation. Since then, newsubstances have constantly been appearing on the market. Itis not rare that there is no time to even identify a new drugbefore another substance takes its place on the market andtheymight disappear a few days, weeks, ormonths later, whilenewer ones appear.This extremely rapidly changing situationconcerning drug use and drug market set new challenges forprofessionals. We have to describe the use of drugs on whichwe have very limited knowledge. Not only is the chemicaldescription of these substances often unavailable, but oftenwe do not even know their street names. The effects of drugsshould be exploredwhile their name and nature are unknownto both the dealer and the user. We have to estimate the risksassociated with substances without being familiar even withtheir most basic characteristics. We have to provide informa-tion to potential users of these drugs and we hardly knowanything about them or treat unknown side effects or over-doses.It is no surprise that in this rapidly changing environmentinitiatives have been launched [5] that apply new dataHindawi Publishing CorporationBioMed Research InternationalVolume 2014, Article ID 534523, 2 pageshttp://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2014/5345232 BioMed Research Internationalcollection methods and aim to gather information as fastas possible and share this knowledge within target groupsvia new effective tools [2, 3]. The opportunities providedby the developments in the field of info communicationtechnologies, the Internet, and smartphones could be of greatvalue for this aspect. All these factors, in fact, contribute to therethinking and renewal of data collection and data analysismethods, the reallocation of resources, and the reconsidera-tion of prevention tools and efforts, aswell as the implementa-tion of other types of interventions.The present special issue,on one hand, intends to make a contribution for facing thesechallenges.On the other hand, during the past few years, “newaddictions” have emerged in addition to the new drugs.Theseaddictions are actually not a new problem of course, but theformerly described disorders appear in a new interpretativeframework. In the past decades, but especially in the past fewyears, the opinion that the range of addictive disorders shouldnot be reduced to psychoactive substances-related dependen-cies has been strengthened. In line with this, scientific litera-ture on addictions has begun to deal with a growing numberof phenomena, originally not classified as addictive disorders,but with important psychological and social consequences[6–8].Among behavioral addictions gambling disorder repre-sents the main area, giving the large diffusion of gambling.With the increase in availability of gambling products acrossthe world and the increased exposure to gambling advertise-ments both on TV and on mobile platforms, we are currentlyfaced with a larger number of people across the globe who areusing gambling as a recreational pursuit.Issues of current significance in the gambling world arethe targeting of children and adolescents by the gamblingindustry, the targeting of older people by larger casinos offer-ing company and distraction but focusing on a vulnerablegroup, and the targeting of female and indigenous popula-tions, who are being reached by specific advertising cam-paigns across most of the world.Besides the new interpretation of gambling disorder,formerly classified as an impulse control disorder, new inter-pretations of numerous other disorders from the addictionperspective have also been raised. Among these are otherimpulse control disorders, eating disorders, specific sexualdisorders, and, among other problems officially not classifiedas disorders, the Internet addiction, online gaming, exerciseaddiction, and many others. It is becoming more and morecommon to see the expressions of behavioral addiction ornonsubstance use addiction [9, 10]. The formal expansion ofthe range of addictive disorders to the direction of addic-tions not related to chemical substances has eventually beenbrought by the publishing of DSM-5 [11]. In this edition of themanual, the former section on “Substance-Related Disorders”has been replaced with “Substance-Related and Addic-tive Disorders.” This chapter indeed includes a subchaptertitled “Non-Substance-RelatedDisorders.” Although addictionexperts could classify several disorders belonging here, at themoment the only official member of this group is gamblingdisorder.
