Altogether 23 diatom taxa wereidentified by light microscopy from undigested samples. Diversity and taxa number ofdiatoms decreased in ali treated assemblages in the first four to six days, this decrease wasthe most remarkable in diclofenac and diflunisal treatments. The number of diatom taxa anddiversity of diatoms increased from the 8th day in ali treated assemblages, this increase wasthe most considerable in ibuprofen treated assemblage, so ibuprofen seemed to be the lesstoxic, while the fluorine containing, hardly degradable diflunisal seemed to be the most toxicon the basis of these regeneration processes.Centric diatoms (Cyc/otella species) were one of the dominant taxa both within the wholealgal assemblages and within diatoms; their initial relative abundance was 26%. Beside themCymbella sp. and Fragi/aria capucina were the most abundant diatom taxa. According totheir responses to the presence of contaminants, diatom taxa can be classified into severalgroups. The dominant Cyc/otella species was not sensitive to NSAID, its relative abundanceincreased in treated assemblages reach ing 80% in some cases, causing the mentioneddecrease of diversity. Other taxa (Cymbella sp., Nitzschia c/osterium, Achnanthes sp. etc)were less sensitive to the treatments, their abundance did not changed during theexperiment. The most sensitive taxa can be characterized by decreasing relative abundancein almost ali treated assemblages (members of Achnanthidium minutissimum species-complex, Fragilaria u/na acus, U1naria u/na).These results show, according to our knowledge for the first time, that the tested, mostlyhardly degradable NSAID have notable effects on algal assemblages, and on diatomsamong them. Interesting ly, diatoms responded differently to NSAID in comparison with otheralgal groups, in terms of the most toxic compound and the regeneration capability of theassemblage. The results suggest that the presence of these contaminants could lead todiversity 1055, depending on the initial composition of the algal assemblage. Further studiesare required for revealing the background processes of the insensitivity of resistant diatomtaxa, which may be involved of future remediation studies.14
