Following t h e  e x p e r i e n c e  g a t h e r e d  by t h e  ERTS i m a g e r i e s  
we a r e  ana1izi ; lg  t h e  photographic  m a t e r i a l  r e c e i v e d  (SL3 
miss ion )  i n  o r d e r  t o  complete  and implencnt  o u r  i n v e s t i g a -  
t i o n  on t h e  I l t .Etna v o l c a n i c  environment .  
A p a r t i c u l a r  a t t e n t i o n  is  given t o  t h e  v e g e t a t i o n  canopy 
m o d i f i c a t i o n  and i t s  r e l a t i o n s h i p  t o  t h e  s o i l  t y p e .  
T h e  Skylab  m i s s i o n s  have been c a r r i e d  o u t  s h o r t l y  he- 
f o r e  t h e  occurence  of  t h e  l a t e r a l  e r u p t i o n  which s t a r t e d  
a t  t h e  end o f  J anua ry  ' 7 4  i n  t h e  wes t e rn  s l o p e  of t h e  cone.  
We i n t e n d  t o  u s e  t h e  Skylab m u l t i s p e c t x a l  d a t a  a l s o  t o  
d i s c r i m i n a t e  t h e  v e 2 e t a t i o n  t y p e  and i t s  s e a s o n a l  r r~odi f i -  
c a t i o n  around t h e  a r e a  where t h e  e r u p t i o n  occured .  
T h i s  i n v e s t i g a t i o n  seems ! f e a s i b l e  c o n s i a e r i n q  t h e  s u p e r i o r  
g e o m e t r i c a l  r e s o l u t i o n  o f  Skylab  i m a g e r i e s  comparing w i t h  
t h a t  o f  ERl'S-A. Magmatic g a s e s  p r e s s u r e  would have had t h e  
s t r e n g h t  t o  e n t e r  t h e  f l y s c h  l a y e r s  r e a c h i n g  t h e  s u r f a c e  
and t h e  f o r c s t r y  s o i l  and i n f l u e n c i n g  t h e  v e q e t a t i o n  life. 
The main g e o l o g i c  l i neamen t s  have been o u t l i n e d  u s i n g  
ERTS images. Some r e s u l t s  have a l r e a d y  been p r e s e n t e d .  
ERTS d a t a  e x p e c i a l l y  d u r i n g  november 1972  p a s s  enphaz ised  
mainly N-S d i r e c t e d  l inearcents  . Unknown l i n e a ~ n e n t s  have 
been d i scove red  i n  c e n t r a l  S i c i l y .  The SL3 photoqraphs  
d o n ' t  show g e n e r a l l y  an agreement w i t h  ERTS d a t a  mainly be- 
c a u s e  o f  t h e  d i f f e r e n t  season  and sun i l l u m i n a t i o n  a n g l e  
and d i r e c t i o n .  
On t h e  o t h e r  hand E-W d i r e c t e d  l i n e a m e n t s  have been 
shown,some o f  t hembe ing  unknown. 
Other  areas: 
a)  rice f i e l d s  i n  Northern I t a l y .

of September 3rd.

Moreover t h e  d e n s i t y  s l i c i n g  t echn ique  was employed 
t o  d i sc r imlnaLz  t h e  d i f f e r e n t  t y p e  o f  veactation. 
b) P a l e o  r i v e r  beds i n  Northern I t a l y .  
The ~ n u l t i s p e c t r a l  camera p h o t o g r a ~ h i e s  have been ana- 
l i z e d  t o  c l a s s i f y  the soils s ~ r f i c i i i l  str~tcturc ancl f o r  
d i s c o v e r i n g  anomalous p a t t e r n s  i n t o  t h e  c u l t i v a t e d  a r e a s .  
By means of a TV ana log  p r o c e s s o r  we t r e a t e d  the i n f o r -  
mat ions  s u p p l i e d  by g reen  and n e a r  i n f r a r e d  bands:  i n  par -  
t i c u l a r  t h e  s l i c i n g  of t h e s e  bands h a s  been performed t o  
d i s t i n g u i s h  t h e  m a t e r i a l s  by mapping t h e i r  s ~ e c t r a l  behaviour ;  
i n  f a c t  it i s  t o  be expected t h a t  t h e  s u r f i c h l  m o i s t u r e  
is  a major i n d i c a t o r  of a p a l e o  r i v e r  bed.
