USER GUIDE TO 1: 250,000 SCALE LUNAR MAPS 
GENERAL 
In 1972 the NASA Lunar Programs Office initiated the Apollo 
Photographic Data Analysis Program. The principal point of this 
program was a detailed scientific analysis of the orbital and 
surface experiments data derived from Apollo missions 15, 16, and 
17. One of the requirements of this program was the production of 
detailed photo base maps at a useable scale. 
NASA in conjunction with the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) 
commenced a mapping program in early 1973 that would lead to the 
production of the necessary maps based on the need for certain 
areas. 
This paper is designed to present in outline form the neces- 
sary background informatiox or users to become familiar with the 
program. 
MAP FORMAT

The s c a l e  chosen f o r  the  p ro j ec t  was 1:250,000 . The re- 
search being done required a  s c a l e  t h a t  Pr inc ipa l  Inves t iga to r s  
( P I ' S )  using o r b i t a l  photography could use,  b u t  would a l s o  serve 
P I ' S  doing sur face  photographic inves t iga t ions .  
Each map shee t  covers an area  four degrees north/south by 
f i v e  degrees east/west.  The base is  compiled from v e r t i c a l  Metric 
photography from Apollo missions 15,  16, and 17. In  i s o l a t e d  
ins tances  the  Apollo oblique metr ic ,  Apollo panoramic, and Lunar 
Orb i t e r  photography were used t o  f i l l  small gaps o r  t o  extend 
imagery t o  include f ea tu re s  t h a t  were the b a s i s  f o r  shee t  names. 
Figures 1 and 2 i l l u s t r a t e  the  a rea  covered by the  v e r t i c a l  met r ic  
photography. 
The numbering system f o r  the  s e r i e s  is based on the  e x i s t i n g  
1:1,000,000 Lunar Astronaut ical  Charts (LAC).  Each LAC Region is 
divided i n t o  four  provinces l e t t e r e d  A,  B,  C, o r  D. Each province 
is  then divided l n t o  qua r t e r s  numbered 1, 2 ,  3 ,  o r  4.  The shee t  
number f o r  each 1:250,000 s c a l e  map cons i s t s  of the  LAC number, 
a  province l e t t e r ,  and the number of  the qua r t e r .  The following 
"Sheet Numbering Guide" i l l u s t r a t e s  LAC 58 subdivided i n t o  i ts  
corresponding 1:250,000 sca l e  map shee t s .

on the  map equals 250,000 of the  same u n i t s  on the  moon. (1" on 
the map equals 250,000" on the  moon). 

FAR SIDE 
SHEET NUMBERING GUIDE 
Figures 3 and 4 locate the 1:250,000 scale maps published 
through January 1975. Table 1 gives map name in numerical order, 
and Table 2 gives map name in alphabetical order. 
Each 1:250,000 scale map sheet is available in two forms: 
1. Lunar Topographic Orthophotomap (LTO) 
2. Lunar Oxthophotomap (LO) 
The basic photographic coverage for the LTO and LO maps is the 
orthophotomosaic. The LTO contains the grid, names data, and 
relief represented by contours, elevations, and other relief 
symbolization as required. The LO contains only the orthophoto- 
mosaic base with exterior grid ticks and values. 
Map sheets published after 1 May 1974 have lines of longitude 
numbered 0' to 360' east. Latitude will still be measured in 
degrees North or South of the equator. A "conversion tablew 
(Table 3) is included to illustrate the new procedure.

The medium sca l e  (1:250,000) Lunar Orthophotomaps (LO) and 
Lunar Topographic Orthophotomaps (LTO) contain two gr ids :  
(1) Geographic Coordinate System and ( 2 )  Lunar Transverse 
Mercator (LTM) Grid Sys t e m .  
1. Geographic Coordinate System 
The o r i g i n  of t he  system is  referenced t o  the cen te r  c f

Lines of longitude a r e  numbered 0' t o  360' e a s t  a s  referenced t o  
the  o r i g i n  of longi tude (NASA adopted t h i s  procedure f o r  maps 
published a f t e r  1 May 1974); l i n e s  of l a t i t u d e  are  numbered 0' t o  
90' progress ively  nor th  and south from the  lunar  equator.  On the  
face  of t' map each lo i n t e r v a l  i s  shown a s  a black l i n e  extend- 
ing across  the  map, and labeled i n  the  margin wi th  i t s  value. 
The southwest corner of each shee t  i s  appropr ia te ly  labeled wi th

2. Lunar Transverse Mercator Grid System (LTM) 
The LTM system cons i s t s  of equal ly  spaced paxa l l e l  l i n e s  
i n t e r sec t ing  a t  r i g h t  angles t o  form 10,000- x e t e r  souares . The 
(l)M6sting A is the  fundamental c r a t e r  f o r  sel3nographic 
measures. I t  is  a %:mall b r i g h t  c r a t e r  located c l o s e s t  t o  the  
cen te r  of the  d i sk .  
CONVERSION TABLE 
TABLE 3 
north-south gr id  l i n e s  a r e  designated a s  ''Easting" (E) l i n e s  and 
the east-west gr id  l i n e s  as "Northing" (N)  l i nes .  The primary 
value of the LTM system is t h a t  it enables a user t o  reference 
a d i sc re te  point on a map without p lo t t ing  degrees, minutes, and 
seconds as  with the Geographic Coordinate System. 
The LTM g r i d  system was developed by dividing the moon i n  
5' zones nunibered consecutively 1 through 72 s t a r t i n g  with Zone 1 
a t  180'-18S0, Zone 2 a t  185'-190°, etc. (Figure 5 ) .  The c e n t r a l  
meridian f o r  each zone is assigned the coordinate value of 100,000 
meters easting. 
Example : 
- The c e n t r a l  meridian for  Zone 1 is located midway 
between 180' and 185' o r  182'30' and has a 
coordinate value of lOO,OOO meters east ing.  
- The cen t ra l  meridian fo r  Zone 2 is located midway 
between 185' and 190' o r  187'30' and has a 
c w r d i n a t e  value of l O O , O O O  meters eas t ing  also.  
The equator is assigned the coordinate value of 2,500,000 meters. 
The Northing l i n e s  increase i n  value going north from the equator 
and decrease in  value going south from the equator. 
The LTM gr id  is shown a t  10,000-meter in te rva l s  by red t i c k  
l i n e s  emanating from the edge of the map (nea t l ine) .  Each 10,000- 
meter t i c k  is labeled with the f u l l  10-kilomet2r value only ( i .e . ,  
the cen t ra l  meridian fo r  each zone is  labeled 100, ra ther  than

100,000). The first LTM grid tick in the southwest corner of each 
map sheet is shawn with full meter values. 
Instructions for computing LTM grid coordinates are printed 
in red on each LO and LTO published. 
LUNAR NOmCLATURE 
Maps are one of the basic tools man uses to pass on informa- 
tion. In the case of earth maps we have navigation aids like roads, 
railroads, rivers, tuwns, etc. - on the moon we have holes, hills, 
cracks, rocks, etc. 
It would be very difficult for me to write about "the 102.5 
mile wide, black-floored crater, with the W-shaped central peak on 
the backside of the @@onw and have everyone understand whic-: crater 
I was talking about. 
Langrenus is credited as the first to assign names to lunar 
features (1645). By the year 1900, lunar nomenclature differed so 
greatly that no one understood it. In 1921, the newly formed 
International Astronomical Union (IAU) appointed a small committee 
to clarify the existing situation and to standardize the nomencla- 
ture. 
When NASA started the 1:250,000 scale map program, it was 
obvious something would have to be done to increase the number of 
names. There were many instances of new maps falling between 
named features. In August, 1973, the IAU met in Sydney, Australia. 
The delegates were shawn examples of the new maps and the problem 
of additional names was discussed. Several new policies were 
adopteti and are outlined here. 
. . If a lunar feature is important enough to talk about, 
~t should have a name. 
2. In the past, lunar names were derived from deceased 
astro:romers or scientists In related fields. The newly adopted 
policj permits the assignment of names of deceased writers, 
pinters, composers, and other contributors to human culture and 
knowledge. Excluded are political, military, and religious 
fiqures, as well as modern philosophers. Table 4 lists the new 
lunar names approved by the IAU to date. 
3. The system of lunar names also includes, to some extent, 
a means of clae7ifying broad types of features. Anyone using 
lunar maps or charts is already familiar with terms like:
