TITLE: Effects of Construction and Staged Filling of Reservoirs on
the Environment and Ecology MMC #341

OBJECTIVE
To study the environmental and ecological impact of the construc-
tion and operation of Oakley Dam and Friends Creek Impoundment located
on the Sangamon River in East Central Illinois.
Personnel at the Construction Engineering Research Laboratory
(CERL) negotiated with staff members from the University of Illinois
for services and facil ities concerning the project. Two contracts are
being considered with the University of 1111noi s at Urbana. One contract
entitled "0akley-Sangamon Environment Research Program II (OSERP) provides
for the collection of ground truth data. This contract is a continuation
of a contract financed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers which com-
menced in September 1971. The second contract will deal with the services
and facilities for the analysis of ERTS imagery and possibly digital
data.
It is hoped negotiations for both contracts will be concl~ded
before the end of the next reporting period, December 8, 1972.
The first ERTS imagery of the study area was received on
5 October 1972.
Several meetings were conducted with the University of Illinois
staff members concerning the ground truth data that was collected last
year under the OSERP contract and what will be needed for correlation
wi th the data deri ved from ERTS i,magery.
No significant results have been derived and applied as of
this time.
