Labor effort and temporary jobs: evidence for Italy

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the incentive role of different type of contract. The hypothesis to be tested is that the probability of exerting effort is higher for temporary workers than for permanent ones, using indicators known in literature (unpaid overtime hours and absenteeism for illness and family reasons). Data are taken from Italian Labour Force Survey. Preliminary results show that temporary workers provide more effort only with regard to absence, but not with regard to unpaid overtime work.
