Particle behaviour in shear and electric fields.

Abstract

Equations are derived for the orientation of a spheroid in Couette flow when an electric field is applied, and are confirmed by experiments with discs. The viscosity of a suspension of spheroids held without rotating in Couette flow, when their polar axes are perpendicular to the fluid vorticity, is calculated. Equations for the orientation of a body of revolution in a generalized shear flow are derived and confirmed experimentally in hyperbolic flow. The translational orbit of an asymmetric body of revolution is calculated. [...
