EQUILIBRATION OF HYDROGEN CATALYZED BY GLASS AND QUARTZ SURFACES

Abstract

The catalytic activities of vessels of quartz, soda glass, Pyrex, Terex and Hario for the equilibration of hydrogen was examinimed by means of a mass spectrometer. It was found that the catalytic activity of these vessels, preliminarily cleansed with bichromic acid mixture and evacuated at 300°C for an hour, increased, passed a maximum and decreased slowly along with the repetition of reactions at 300D C each for 30 min. followed by 10 min. evacuation at the same temperature, and was variously affected by different contaminations of wall or imprities in gas. The activation energy of the equilibration was ca. 14 Kcal/mole
