Spain.INTRODUCTIONIn the mid-1970's various studies began to stimulate inte-rest in the genetic investigation of maize used specificallyas forage. Gallais et al. (1) showed that the proportion ofgrain could not be employed as the sole criterion of quality.Hunter (2) reported that a selection directed towards a goodyield of total dry matter and a high quality in the whole plantwould be more promising than that aimed at grain yield. Deinum& Bakker (3) expressed the opinion that selection for the nu-tritive quality of the stover would be worthwhile. The presentstudy evaluates the genetic potential in the production andquality of stover in two varieties of maize which have provedvaluable as a base material for the production of grain.MATERIAL ANDMETIIODSThe varieties BS13(S2)C4 and Lancaster were chosen. The qualityof the stover was estimated by means of the digestibility "Invitro" of the dry matter (dDM) in plants harvested with a per-centage of DM ranging from 29 to 35%. Alternative methods weresought to simplify the determination of the DM. The best corre-lation found was with neutral detergent fibre according to theequation dDM=105.37-0.93NDF, (r=-0.91). Other traits consideredare indicated in Table l.A total of 63 families of half-sibs and 187 families of full-sibs were analyzed according to the model proposed by Comstock& Robinson (4). The traits were studied in 20 individual s perfamily of fUll-sibs, with the exception of NDF for which threeindividual s were selected at random from each family.RESULTSThe Lancaster variety yielded 15% more total digestible drymatter, and showed greater variability than the varietyBS13(S2)C4. Therefore, it was decided to continue the studywith the Lancaster variety only.The estimated heretability of the stover NDF was 0.32,esponse to selection (R/i) equal to 1.70% (Table 1).with avariables whichhigh quality drymay positively influencematter, a study of theadditive genetic and phenotypical correlations amongthe consi-dered traits was done (Table 2). The negative correlation bet-weenNDF and the yield parameters is especially interesting.Table 1: Heretability and response to selection of thefollowing traits: PS= days to pollen shedding,PH=plant height (cm), TN= total nodes, SY=stoveryield(g), EY= ear yield (g), TY= total yield (g),NDF=neutral-detergent fibre (%), and EH/PH= earheight/plant height.According to the results, it can be concluded that the Lancas-ter variety, which has traditionally been employed to obtaingrain material, could also be used as a starting point in thebreeding of productive highly digestible forage corno The nega-tive correlation of NDF with grain and stover production wouldbe very favourable.
