A Sociological Inquiry into Technical Controversies and Its Closure: Based on the Case of "F-Filter"

Abstract

Controversies are common concerns of sociology of science and social study of technology. The process of dealingwith controversies to seek a closure always means a construction process of fact.Focusing on standardization, a typical institutionalapproach to achieve consensus, as a cut-in point to study technological controversy, this research traces a controversy case of"F-Filter" based on the Access-Controversy-Translation Model raised by Junbin SU (2008) ."F-Filter" Case indicates that the"meso-standard" shared among members of A Working Group is a precondition based on which controversy proceeds and getsclosured. After analyzing the factors that constitute the meso-standard of A Working Group, the author points out that the socialconstruction process should be interpreted by the continuing interaction between human and non-human actors
