Effect of polyethylene glycol molecular weight and concentration on the performance of polyethersulfone hollow fiber ultrafiltration membranes

Abstract

The effect of polyethylene glycol( PEG) molecular weight and concentration on the performance of PES hollow-fiber membranes, fabricated by phase inversion process, was investigated. The results demonstrated that the rejection and tensile strength decrease gradually when the PEG molecular weight increases from 600 to 20 000.Meanwhile,the pure water flux first increases and then decreases, which reaches the maximum value of 177.41 L /( h·m2) at the PEG molecular weight of 6 000.In addition, with the increase of the PEG-6 000 concentration from 4% to 10%,the pure water flux gradually increases, whereas both the rejection and tensile strength gradually decrease.
