萨本栋是中国著名的物理学家、电机工程学家和教育家。他首先使用标幺值法分析电机性能，开创性地提出用并矢量法解决电路问题，用英语著述出版的《交流电机基础》，成为美国不少高校的教材。他认为如果国内高校不改变长期使用英语授课，利用外国教材的状况，则中国学术永无独立之日。为了创建中国的学科教材体系，萨本栋率先使用汉语编著出版了大学物理教材《普通物理学》，打破了国内高校长期使用外国教材的历史。后来，萨本栋又撰写了《普通物理学实验》，作为配套教材。萨本栋在担任厦门大学校长期间，由于抗日战争爆发，物资匮乏，连学生用的课本也难以买到。萨本栋便自力更生，编著出版了《实用微积分》教材。萨本栋认为科研和教学并不矛盾，...Sa Ben-dong is a famous physicist, electrical engineer and educator.
