近代汉语中的很多常用词，其义虽然明确，其源则不甚明了。本文选取三十组来源不明的常用词，将其放到汉语史的背景中，考察词义的产生、发展以及用字情况，弄清其在汉语中的原始形式（语音形式和文字形式），在有文献可考的历史中是如何演变成今天的形态的，属历史语言学的范畴。 新词语或旧词新义的产生，往往是各种因素综合作用的结果，因此，本文注重多角度、多途径地探讨常用词的来源及发展变化情况。词的语音形式、意义内容乃至书写形式的变化都可能造成一个新词，有些短语因长期连用最终也会凝结成词，这就是词汇化。同一语义场的词会互相影响，在意义上互相渗透，一些语义场的形成是类化构词的结果。另外，方言对通语的影响也不可忽视。...There are many words in modern Chinese that we know what they mean but we don’t know their etymology.
