The author chooses to study the text in SI that is provided to the interpreters with no sufficient time for preparation. The Effort Model is introduced as the theoretical framework of the thesis and helps to analyze the positive and negative impacts of text on SI quality. An empirical study is conducted to compare the quality between SI with and without text from the perspectives of fidelity and language and delivery, and the reasons lying behind the differences are also explored. The results of the experiment are in line with the theoretical analysis: the overall performance in SI with text is better than that in SI without text. The same goes for fidelity, but interpreters tend to omit big chunks of information when lagging far behind the speaker in SI with text while the information loss in SI without text is confined to details. The language and delivery in SI without text is more fluent and natural by contrast. The thesis is made up of six chapters. The first chapter is an introduction of the definition and classification of SI, as well as the purpose, methodology and significance of the study. The second chapter contains two parts of literature reviews. One is a review of studies on SI with and without text both home and abroad and the other is on interpreting quality evaluation. The assessment chart of English Interpreting Certificate is introduced and proves suitable for the quality evaluation in the empirical study through explanation and argumentation. In the third chapter, the Effort Model proposed by Gile is demonstrated and the respective models in SI with and without text are analyzed. On basis of the model, the impacts that the text brings to SI quality are deduced from the positive and negative angles. The fourth chapter serves as description of the empirical study with elaborate explanation on elements such as the experiment design, assessment and selection of the materials. The fifth chapter represents experiment data in the form of histograms to demonstrate the comparison of SI with text and without text respectively in regards of the total score, fidelity and language and delivery. Then the author probes into the reasons behind the differences based on the effort model and suggestions for SI training and SI practitioners are offered. The sixth chapter contains conclusions about the findings and limitations of the thesis. Likewise, the study of SI as a mysterious occupation as well as a systematic subject has obtained academic importance. Different theories have been proposed about the perception of SI. 1.1.1 Definition of SI Various definitions of SI have been proposed by scholars from the perspective of its working pattern or its cognitive perceptions. According to Seleskovitch, SI conveys a message into another language at virtually the same moment in time as it is expressed in the first language (1978: 3). This definition states the simultaneity of SI, but it fails to mention the technical assistance needed to make it happen. The definition by Zhang Weiwei is comparatively more comprehensive: SI, generally refers to the conference interpreting, in which, the interpreter, by using technical equipment, perceives a usly to target language for the audience (1999: 6). On the cognitive level, Nicholson divides SI nderstanding, analyzing, translating and speaking with the goal of communicating a message from one language 1992: 56). Therefore, SI can be defined as a process that interpreters orally translate the speaker's words continuously from source language into target language at almost the listening, comprehending, memorizing, translating and speaking skills are all actively engaged. SI is normally performed in sound-proof booths with a setting of professional equipment. SI is a highly demanding mental process with three major cognitive tasks going on in parallel, namely, comprehension, memorization and production, resulting 厦门大学博硕士论文摘要库Chapter One Introduction 2  in stressful pressure on the interpreters to cope with the time constraints and information density, which requires intensive training and persistent practice of the interpreters. 1.1.2 Classification of SI 1.1.2.1 Language Directions According to the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC), the languages an interpreter masters can be classified into three categories, A, B and C: The A language refers to into which they work from all their other working languages in both consecutive and  The  The C terpreter understands perfectly but into which they do not work. In this thesis, SI interpreters possess Chinese as their A language and English as their B language. Though most Chinese interpreters are trained to interpret both from and into their native language, the thesis will be focusing on E-C SI due to limitation of time and energy.  1.1.2.2 Working Modes On basis of different working modes, SI can be divided into the following three types: SI without text, sight interpreting, and whisper interpreting. SI without the text is the basic mode of SI. The interpreter hears the speaker s speech from the earphone and watches the pictures or PowerPoint slides that the speaker displays through the booth window if there are any, and interprets into a microphone in a sound-proof booth.
