Questo studio prende in esame le attestazioni e i tratti distintivi di due temi ricorrenti
nella poesia greca: αἰδώς negli occhi e αἰδώς sul volto. Dall’epoca arcaica fino a quella
tardoantica i poeti affermano che l’αἰδώς, intesa nell’uno o nell’altro dei suoi molti
significati (‘rispetto’, ‘ritegno’, ‘pudore’, ‘vergogna’), risiede negli occhi di uomini e
donne. A partire dalla poesia ellenistica, si dice anche che l’αἰδώς, nel senso di ‘pudore’,
induce le fanciulle e (raramente) i giovani uomini a distogliere o abbassare gli occhi.
Per quanto riguarda il tema dell’αἰδώς sul volto, Euripide e i poeti successivi dicono
abbastanza spesso che l’αἰδώς, intesa come ‘pudore’ o (raramente) ‘vergogna’, causa il
rossore del viso. Quando l’αἰδώς è paragonata a porpora che colora le guance o quando
comunque si specifica che l’αἰδώς fa arrossire le guance, il tema si applica solo a donne
(specialmente fanciulle). Quando si dice semplicemente che l’αἰδώς provoca il rossore,
senza associazioni con la porpora o con le guance, il motivo si trova anche riferito a
uomini e ragazzi.This paper investigates the occurrences and the distinctive features of two motives
throughout Greek poetry: αἰδώς in the eyes and αἰδώς on the face. From archaic until
late antique poetry, αἰδώς, exhibiting one or the other of its many meanings (‘respect’,
‘restraint’, ‘modesty’, ‘shame’), is said to reside in the eyes of men and women. Starting from Hellenistic poetry, αἰδώς, in the sense of ‘modesty’, is also said to make girls and
(rarely) young men withdraw or lower their eyes. As regards the motif of αἰδώς on the
face, Euripides and later poets say quite often that αἰδώς, meaning ‘modesty’ or (rarely)
‘shame’, makes the face blush. When αἰδώς is compared with purple that colours the
cheeks or when anyway αἰδώς is said to make the cheeks blush, the motif applies only
to women (especially girls). When αἰδώς is simply said to cause the blushing, without
being associated with purple or the cheeks, the motif is also to be found in connection
with men and boys
