Abstract

The transport costs for the construction of a manned Lunar and Martian base will be one or two decimal powers higher as compared to low earth orbit. Therefore, future prolonged manned missions both technically and financially call for a reduction in the supply and transport requirement to a minimum by using regenerative technologies. The present study leads to the conclusion that on the basis of foreseeable technology developments in conjunction with a restructuring of subsystem functions, the supply requirement of manned (and within limits also unmanned) space systems can decisively be reduced. However, some of the necessary technologies are not available yet or their development has only just begun.
