Abstract

By transesterification of the rape oil triglycerides with methanol to rape oil methyl ester a synthetic fuel (biodiesel) is obtained with properties very similar to diesel fuel, and which can be directly used in existing diesel motors. Technical processes for the production of rape oil methyl ester are described and analyzed taking into account process chemistry, chemical engineering, process engineering and economical aspects. Four different project types are defined and subjected to a detailed economical analysis: small plants (< 2.000 t/a; rural recycling plants), agro-refineries (< 15.000 t/a; regionary plants), annex plants (> 30.000 t/a; annex to oil mills) and high-capacity plants (> 100.000 t/a).
