In this thesis the possibilities and limits of societal climate impact research are analysed. Rather than using a climate-deterministic approach, the analysis focuses on the ability of society to adapt to climate changes. A climate impact assessment that does not consider societal adaption proesses underestmates the capacity of social systems to learn and to adapt to environmental changes. However, a blind confindence in the ability of society to adapt to these changes fails to recognize and address the problems, resulting from the process of adaptation itself. Therefore a method for successful evaluation of these adaptation processes has been developed in regards to the field of tourism in the coastal area of northern Germany.
