Abstract

A review is given on guide lines, standard values and criteria for the evaluation of soil contaminations (metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated hydrocarbons) including definitions of the terms used for characterization. Standard values and their foundations are discussed for children's playgrounds, residential districts, gardens, agricultural acreages, industrial areas, sport and park grounds. There exists urgent need for further epidemiologic investigations on the real health hazards by human uptake of noxious substances from soils. At the present only the hazard path soil-plant can be regarded as sufficiently characterized.
