He taught art and design until 1998 whenhe became a full time painter and lecturer. Hehas had many one man shows and alsoshowed at the 1999 Art Expo in New York.George Birrell is a frequent contributor toexhibitions at the Scottish Societies. He has a strong interest in the architecture ofthe East Coast Scottish towns and fishingvillages, and these feature in many of hispaintings. The immaculately designed formsare crisp and clean-cut and cohere beautifullyin blocks of saturated colour.“I am inspired by the East Coast of Scotland, itsarchitecture and evidence of the hand of manon the landscape. In 1975 hereceived a painting scholarship from theInstitute of Cultural Affairs in Chicago andtravelled for a period through the UnitedStates, Canada and Iceland. He has shown at numerous solo exhibitionsincluding the John D Kelly Gallery, Glasgow,the Peter Potter Gallery, Haddington, theDuncan Gallery at Castle Douglas and thePortico Gallery, Manchester. His work may befound in many private collections in the UK,Belgium, the United States, Hong Kong, andAustralia. Her Scottish father and Austrian mothercame to Glasgow when she was agedthirteen. Pam gained a degree at GlasgowSchool of Art and has lectured for many yearsin schools and colleges including lecturing atFalkirk College. Awards include: Royal College of Physiciansand Surgeons Award, RGI 1996; Paisley InstituteAward 1998; Visual Arts Scotland Award 1999and the Mark Greer Award, Paisley Art Institute2009. Solo exhibitions include: the Glasgow ArtsCentre; the Torrance Gallery, Edinburgh; theMall Galleries and Ainscough ContemporaryArt, London. Group exhibitions include: Gallery41, Edinburgh; the Royal Glasgow Institute; theRoyal Scottish Academy and Art Expo, NewYork.“My main inspiration is in the Scottish land andseascape. I enjoy using colour to definecontours, structure and changing lightsequences. I search out specific view points. In the early 1980s he was appointedsenior lecturer at Glasgow School of Art and workedthere until 1997. Mike now divides his time betweenhis Argyll studio, painting trips and teaching at theUniversity of Lincoln, where he was awarded apersonal professorial chair in art and design in 2003. A popular colourist painter of rich still lifes, Scottishlandscapes, snow scenes and seascapes, Mikepaints spontaneous ‘plein-air’ scenes in the Highlandsand the Islands. He is a true painter of the ScottishSchool and has exhibited extensively throughout hiscareer in his native Scotland and also in London, NewYork, Philadelphia, Maryland, Bermuda and Japan.His artworks may be found in several public,corporate and private collections worldwideincluding: Glasgow School of Art; the EuropeanParliament; the Royal Mail; Woburn Abbey; Argylland Bute Museum and Libraries; the ScottishEducation Department; The Collection, Bermuda,under the patronship of HRH the Prince of Wales;Harvard Business School with the Bank of Scotland;Coutts Bank and Royal Bank of Scotland. Acareer in Art Education followed until 1995,when he decided to paint full time. Kelsey hasexhibited in many annual exhibitions, such asR.G.I., R.S.A. and P.A.I. In 1998 he was awardeda Diploma from the Paisley Art Institute. P.A.I.Solo shows include: Thompson’s Galleries,London 1994 to 2008; John Martin Gallery,London 1996, 1998; Kranenburg and Fowler,Oban 2003; Belloc Lowndes, Chicago 1999;Corrymella Scott, Newcastle 2000, 2004 andWalker Galleries, Harrogate, 2003, 2005 and2007. He has painted andexhibited constantly while teaching full time inNorth Lanarkshire. He exhibits regularly at theRoyal Scottish Academy, The Royal GlasgowInstitute and Thompson’s Galleries in London. InApril 2000 his work was featured by the SundayTimes in an article on contemporary Britishlandscape painting. The weathered landscapes of Kintyre, theClyde Valley and Scottish Borders are constantsources of ideas and inspiration for Peter.Colour and the tactile qualities of paint areessentials in his focus on capturing thechanging moods of light, seasons andweather.
