LamoureuxDepartment of BotanyUniversity of Hawaii at ManoaHonolulu, Hawaii 96822Although biologists have long assumed that the influx ofexotic plants and animals reaching Hawai'i in the past 200 yearshas caused severe disturbances in natural ecosystems and tonative organisms, few reliable data have been obtained. Somesuch data have been obtained in recent years, mostly in connec-tion with Hawaii IBP and with the National Park Service. Thispaper will discuss a number of different effects of introducedspecies, including their roles in destruction or displacement ofnative species, spreading fire, biological control, changes inmoisture regimes, and disease introduction and spread. Theliterature will be summarized and gaps in our knowledge requiringfurther work will be indicated.It is postulated that the ratespecies, and hence the rate atimposed on Hawaiian ecosystems, hasaccounting for the magnitude ofthese ecosystems.* Abstractof introduction of exoticwhich perturbations have beenbeen an important factor inchange which has occurred in.
