FEPA members who wish to publicize Asia-oriented teach-ing programs at their respective institution~ are urged to con-tribute their news to the Newsletter of the Association forAsian Studies, with which FEPA is now associated. Asian Per-spectives will, however, welcome contributions of news aboutthose aspects of teaching programs that relate directly to theprimary interests of FEPA and will print such news whenever itis available.One on-going research operation of interest to many FEPAmembers is the Tri-Institutional Pacific Program (TRIPP), inwhich Yale University, the University of Hawaii, and BishopMuseum are cooperating, with support from the Carnegie Corpor-ation of New York, in the study of the Malayo-Polynesian speakingpeoples of Oceania. Chairman of the executive committee directingthe program is Alexander Spoehr of Bishop Museum. Inaugurated in1953, the program has already lent its support in varying degreesto linguistic studies by George W. Grace of Columbia Universityamong the peoples of Melanesia, by Isidore Dyen of Yale Univer-sity among the western Malayo-Polynesian peoples, and by SamuelH. Elbert of the University of Hawaii among the Rennell Island-ers and related peoples; to archaeological work by DouglasOsborne of Yale University in the Palau Islands and by J. Golsonof Auckland, University College in Tonga and Western Samoa; andto studies of culture change among various Malayo-Polynesiangroups by Roland Force of the Chicago Natural History Museum(Palau), Melvin Embree of Yale University (American Samoa),Norman Meller of the University of Hawaii (Guam, Palau, theMarshalls, Samoa), Saul Reisenberg of the U.S. National Museum(American Samoa), Marion Saunders of the U.S. Trust Territory(Micronesian students in Hawaii), Leonard Mason of the Univer-sity of Hawaii (relocated Bikini islanders in the Marshalls),George P. Murdock of Yale University (Fiji), Ward Goodenough ofthe University of Pennsylvania (New Britain), Douglas Oliver ofHarvard University (Tahiti), and Robert B. and Barbara Lane of117 Asian Perspectives (II, 1958)the University of Hawaii (New Hebrides). Recently scheduledprojects include culture change studies by Jean Guiart of theSorbonne in New Hebrides, by Cyril Belshaw of the University ofBritish Columbia in Fiji, and by William Davenport of YaleUniversity in the Santa Cruz Islands; and archaeological workin Tahiti planned for 1959 by Kenneth P. Emory of Bishop Museum.Publication of research results is expected to begin in 1958.Widespread interest among Asian specialists of all sorts hasattended the recent formation of a new non-profit organizationdevoted to fostering mutual understanding between Asians andAmericans, the Asia Society, Inc. Now located at 18 East 50thStreet, New York 22, No Yo, its headquarters will eventually bemoved to 112 East 64th Street, New York, where an Asia Houseis now under construction as a gift to the Asia Society from JohnD. Rockefeller III. The Society strives to stimulate Americaneducation relating to Asia, to render service to Asians coming tothe United States, and to encourage cultural interchange. It isspecially concerned with South and Southeast Asia but cooperateswith existing organizations interested in other Asian areas, suchas the China Institute and the Japan Society. It publishes aquarterly Asia Society Letter of news and comment relating toAmerican-Asian cultural relations and plans the publication ofbibliographies for non-specialists and similar aids to Asianunderstanding among the American public. Paul C. Sherbert isExecutive Director, and Ward Morehouse is Educational Director.The Asia Foundation, the Japan Society, the China Institute,and the Asia Society are jointly or individually assisting 1958summer workshops or institutes on Asia for in-service teachersand other community leaders at the following sixteen institutions:Brooklyn College, Bucknell University, University of California,Duke University, University of Florida, Harvard University,University of Kansas, Michigan State University, University ofMichigan, New Jersey State Teachers College at Montclair, NewYork State University Teachers College at Cortland, New YorkState University Teachers College at New Paltz, New York StateUniversity Teachers College at Plattsburgh, Syracuse University,Temple University, and University of Washington.
