Les dictionnaires surréalistes (alphabet et déraison)

Abstract

"Glossaire j y serre mes gloses" de Michel Leiris (1925 et 1939), le "Dictionnaire critique" de la revue "Documents" (1929-1930), le "Dictionnaire abrégé du surréalisme" (1938), l "encyclopédie" Da Costa (1947-1949), le "Lexique succinct de l érotisme" (1959), "Objets d identité" (1976) sont autant d ouvrages par alphabet produits par le surréalisme (et alentours), sans compter les réalisations plus modestes qui imitent la forme dictionnairique. Au-delà des apparentes incompatibilités entre écriture surréaliste et écriture lexicographique, le dictionnaire fut pour le surréalisme un genre particulièrement fécond. Il répond d abord à un choix institutionnel, à l ambition encyclopédique du mouvement ; ensuite à une attraction naturelle pour un genre hétéroclite et un ordre anti-architectural qui place les mots à la clef de tout ; enfin à une démarche polémique qui instruit le procès du vocabulaire et en ouvre autoritairement le sens. Above and beyond the apparent incompatibilities between surrealist and lexicographical writing, the dictionary was an especially rich genre in surrealism. It primarily was the response to an institutional choice the encyclopedic ambition of the movement. It then became the natural attraction for a heterogeneous genre and an anti-architectural order that positioned words as the key to everything. Finally, the dictionary answered a polemical undertaking that informed the critique of vocabulary and expanded the sense of it in an authoritarian manner. The playful exploitation of terms beyond their prescribed usage, however, led to conceiving of language from a viewpoint not so distant from certain notions of linguistics.PARIS4-BU Serpente (751052129) / SudocSudocFranceF
