Abstract

Carter & Peace, building contractors and hardware merchants were established in Burnie in 1920 by J.C. Peace and A.H. Carter. Mr Peace died in 1946 and Mr Carter in 1960, but the firm continued until1970 when the Peace estate was wound up and the managing director, A.H. McInnes, retired and was sold in 1971. The firm undertook building work through out the north west coast, including, for example: Devon Hospital (1924), N.W. Butter Factory, Ulverstone Picture Theatre (1926), Bay View Hotel (1927), Ulverstone State School (1927), Burnie Technical School (1946), S1. David's Church Cooee (?1931), Somerset Bacon Factory (?1936), Baptist Church Offices Launceston (1934), Burnie Star of The Sea Church side altars (?1939).
