У запропонованій статті розглянуто поняття волевиявлення як лінгвістичної категорії в сучасній англістиці; визначено категорії «воля» та «волевиявлення»; вказано на феномен волі та пов'язані з нею категорії; виявлено етапи розгортання волевиявлення; виокремлено конститутивні ознаки волевиявлення; обґрунтовано визначення волевиявлення в статусі самостійного модального значення; схарактеризовано семантичні ознаки англійських дієслів зі значенням волевиявлення; проаналізовано семантику сучасних дієслів англійської мови на позначення волі мовця в аспекті волітивності та волюнтативності; виділено певні дієслова із семою волі у конструкціях з інфінітивом та окреслено шкалу градуального варіювання волітивності.В представленной статье рассмотрено понятие волеизъявления как лингвистической категории в современной англистике; определены категории «воля» и «волеизъявление»; указан феномен воли и связанных с ней категорий; выявлены этапы развертывания волеизъявления; выделены конститутивные признаки волеизъявления; обосновано определение волеизъявления в статусе самостоятельного модального значения; охарактеризованы семантические признаки английских глаголов со значением волеизъявления;
проанализирована семантика современных глаголов английского языка для обозначения воли говорящего
в аспекте волитивности и волюнтативности; выделены определенные глаголы с семой воли в конструкциях с инфинитивом и обозначена шкала градуального варьирования волитивности.The given article deals with the notion of volition as a linguistic category in contemporary English on the basis of preliminary analysis experience. We define the categories of “will” and “volition” in linguistic area in regard to psychological and philosophical studies. The paper discusses the phenomenon of “will” and the associated categories such as “desire”, “conscience”, “freedom”, “obligation”, “choice”, “decision”. The article identifies the stages
of the will deployment: motive, orientation/direction, making a choice, application of efforts, action implementation.
We define volition as independent modal meaning which correlates with the semantic space encompassing modal
meanings of possibility, necessity, and desirability. We distinguish constitutive features of volition such as 1) presence of will as inherency of a person’s ability to manifest activity, 2) volition as implementation of an action directed to the definit object, 3) performativity as reality alteration owing to action implementation, 4) graduation as internal
quality of volition, 5) availability of heterogeneous components of will that are defined as separate concepts. The paper characterizes semantic features of English verbs with the meaning of volition; analyzes semantics of modern English verbs thus differentiating their denoting the will of a speaker in the aspect of willingness and voluntariness. The article
highlights a number of verbs containing the semantic feature of will in their semantics as they enter constructions with the infinitive (ache, agree, aim, aspire, attempt, authorize, bring, choose, condescend, dare, deign, demand, designate, desire, determine, endeavor, force, hesitate, intend, itch, long, mean, offer, pine, pressurize, reckon, stand, strive, tend, try, volunteer, want, wish). The paper provides a scale of gradual variation of willingness with strong
negative volition, strong positive volition and “null volition” in the center
