This article dwells upon the problem of nicknames’ origin in English, German, and Ukrainian. The author analyzes three thematic nickname groups: political, criminal, and school
and university nicknames in the languages. This research concerns nicknames’ formation and composition, it presents differences and common processes for English, German, and Ukrainian in the attempt to find out typological correspondences for these genetically related languages
