(Eng)Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finlandiris.tahvanainen@lut.fiLappeenranta University of Technology, Academic LibraryTOWARDS OPENNESS IN LAPPEENRANTA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGYChallenges in Open Access• It seems that the biggest obstacle for parallel publishing is researchers´misconceptions about the open access publishing in general and especially about the green open access publishing• Often researchers do not want to publish final draft/post print version of their articles• Publishing contracts and their interpretations • Without incentive bonuses researchers are often reluctant to use time and effort to parallel publish their articlesLibrary´s role in Open Access• In the beginning Library promoted actively open access idea in the university• Open access publishing and research data working group was established 2013• The working group operates under the leadership of the Library representative• Guidance and training for researchers• What is open access? • How to parallel publish?• Copyright and permissions• Developing parallel publishing infrastructure in cooperation with the National Library and IT services• Validating parallel published articles Future• Data transmission between LUTPub and CRIS (LUT Research Portal)• Parallel publishing will be more attractive for researcher, when the process is easy• University is currently preparing data policy and infrastructure for data management• Library will provide systematically open access education for researchers • More help for researchers from support services (hopefully!)• Funding model for universities may include the volume of open access publishing• Research funders may more often demand open access of research results and research dataBackground• In December 2014, Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) President´s decision stated that LUT recommends parallel online publication of all published scientific articles, other publications and dissertations in the LUTPub Repository from the beginning of 2015• Many research funding institutions, such as the EU Horizon 2020 framework programme and Academy of Finland, have started to require open access to the results and the data of publicly funded research• Ministry of Education and Culture recommends strongly Open Science • Open Science and Research Initiative promotes research information availability and open science platform for the years 2014-2017 • Many studies show that open access to research articles generates more visibility and citations to articlesLUTPub Repository• Doria is a DSpace based multi-institutional repository maintained by the National Library of Finland• LUTPub is one of Doria´s sub-communities and it contains theses and other publications in electronic form • LUT has had a relatively long history of thesis open access publishing• First Master’s theses were published in LUTPub at the end of 1990`s, currently all Master’s theses are published in LUTPub• Since 2005, all Bachelor’s theses have been published only in electronic form in LUTPub. • All doctoral dissertations are published in LUTPub. • The first article was parallel published in LUTPub in 2014.
