Jpn, 17 September.Scope of ResearchMetallic multilayer films have been prepared by ultrahigh vacuum deposition method.  Magnetic and electrictransport properties of metallic multilayers have been studied by various techniques including 57Fe and 119Sn Mössbauerspectroscopy , x-ray magnetic scattering, and neutron diffraction. Microstructured films such as wires and dots havebeen successfully prepared by electron beam lithography and novel magnetic and transport properties are investigated.Assoc  InstrALMOKHTAR,A M MTechnKUSUDA, ToshiyukiICR Annual Report, Vol. 8, 2001 17Magnetic domain wall in a nano-contactWe report here the magnetic structure and electricresistance of a domain wall (DW) in a nano-contactbetween two NiFe wires. The sample was fabricated by anelectron beam lithography and lift-off method (Fig. 1).The size of the prepared contact in Fig. 1 is 15 × 20 nm2.The thickness of the sample is 10 nm. Figure 2 shows amagnetic force microscopy image of the trapped DW inthe contact. The dark signals indicate magnetic chargedistribution. The magnetization configuration inferredfrom a  micromagnetics simulation indicates that a small180 degree Bloch wall is confined in the nano-contactarea.?The magnetoresistance (MR) curves droppedabruptly when the DW was trapped in the small contact(Fig. 3). García et al. [1] experimentally observed largepositive resistance change up to 300 % at roomtemperature by the confined domain wall in a pointcontact between two macroscopic Ni wires. On the otherhand, we observed the negative DW contribution to theMR, which is understood on the basis of anisotropicmagnetoresistance effect around the contact.1 García et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 2923 (1999).Magnetic structures of Fe/Gd multilayer filmsinvestigated by resonant x-ray magneticscattering techniqueNow it becomes possible to investigate magneticstructures of ferromagnetic multilayers by x-ray diffractiontechnique.  Using a resonant x-ray magnetic scattering atGd L3 edge, magnetic depth profiles of Gd layers in the[Fe(3.53 nm)/Gd(4.85 nm)]×15 multilayer were determined.The depth-dependent average Gd magnetizations paralleland perpendicular to the applied field are shown in Figs. 4aand 4b.  The external field is applied parallel to the filmplane and the Gd magnetizations always stay in the filmplane.  While in a weak field (0.5 kOe), the depth-dependent Gd magnetizations are parallel to the appliedfield, the perpendicular components are observed in thefield of 5.0 kOe.  Such behavior is qualitativelyunderstandable by Camley model [1].  However the modelpredicts a uniform magnetization profile of the parallelcomponent in the weak field region at 10 K.   Thediscrepancy may come from the magnetic anisotropy of theGd layer, which is not considered in the model.  Thenon-uniform magnetization depth profile in the field of 0.5kOe indicates that there are depth-dependent distributionsin the orientation of the Gd magnetizations and thedistribution width is narrower in the interface parts of theGd layer.1 R.E.Camley, Phys.
