Las regiones tradicionales de la artesanía del batik en Indo-
nesia se hallan principalmente en la isla de Java (Yogyakar-
ta, Solo, Pekalongan, Cirebon, Garut, Tasikmalaya, Tuban, 
Lasem…) y también en la isla de Madura.
En otros tiempos, antes del descubrimiento de los co-
lores químicos, los artesanos del batik utilizaban esencias 
vegetales tales como la Indigofera tinctoria (en indonesio 
tom, nilo, taum o tarum) para obtener el azul, la Morinda ci-
trifolia para obtener el rojo, la Vitex fubencens y a veces tam-
bién la Artocarpus integra para el amarillo, y el soga para el 
marrón (que se conseguía a partir de tres plantas: la corteza 
de jambal o Pelthopherum ferregineum, la madera de tinggi 
o Ceriops condolleana y la madera de tegerang o Cudrania 
javanensis). Para cada color había que impregnar el batik de 
veinte a treinta veces en el baño de tinte y la fabricación de 
un batik podía requerir muchos meses.
En 1856, el inglés William Henry Perkin descubrió un 
procedimiento para fabricar colores sintéticos más varia-
dos, más estables y más prácticos. Bastaba con dos o tres 
baños. Posteriormente, los holandeses llevaron los colores 
químicos a Indonesia (en aquel momento, las Indias Ho-
landesas) y los implantaron en todos los talleres de batik 
de Java. Fue así como se empezó a abandonar los colores 
vegetales.
No fue hasta 1995, con ocasión de una conferencia en 
Ginebra sobre el etiquetaje ecológico patrocinada por el 
International Trade Centre Unctad/WTO, cuando los par-
ticipantes declararon que las sustancias azoicas que encon-
tramos en los colores sintéticos de tipo naftol eran cance-
rígenas. Ahora bien, el 99,9 % de los artesanos del batik 
The regions with a long tradition in batik crafts are found 
mainly on the island of Java (Jogjakarta, Solo, Pekalongan, 
Cirebon, Garut, Tasikmalaya, Tuban, Lasem…) or on the 
island of Madura. 
Centuries ago, before the discovery of chemical dye-
stuffs, batik artisans used plant essences like Indigofera 
tinctoria (in Indonesian, tom, nilo, taum or tarum) to ob-
tain blue, Morinda citrifolia to obtain red, Vitex fubencens 
and sometimes Artocarpus integra for yellow, and soga for 
brown (which they obtained using three plants: the bark of 
jambal or Pelthopherum ferregineum, the wood of tinggi or 
Ceriops condolleana and the wood of tegerang or Cudrania 
javanensis). For each colour the batik had to be soaked be-
tween 20 and 30 times in the dyebath; the production of a 
batik could take many months.
In 1856, the Englishman William Henry Perkin discov-
ered a procedure for producing more varied, more stable 
and more practical synthetic colours. Only two or three 
soaks were required. Soon, the Dutch took chemical col-
ours to Indonesia (at that time, the Dutch East Indies) and 
introduced them in all the batik workshops in Java. In this 
way, plant dyes began to disappear. 
It was not until 1995 that the participants at a conference 
in Geneva on ecological labelling organized by the Interna-
tional Trade Centre Unctad/WTO declared that the azoic 
substances found in synthetic colours of naphthol type 
were carcinogenic. Almost all the batik industry uses naph-
thol. Soon afterwards, the CBI (Centre for the Promotion 
of Import from Developing Countries) of the Netherlands 
published a document that prohibited the exportation of

Indonesian textiles, including batik (ref. CBI/HB-3032 -13 
June 1996).
So a solution had to be found if Indonesian batiks were 
to be accepted in the world market and if this cultural herit-
age – the livelihood of so many crafts workers in our coun-
try – was to be revived. When I worked at the crafts and 
batik centre of Jogjakarta, I felt that it was my duty, as a 
trained chemist, to research and develop a range of stable, 
practical plant dyestuffs.
In 1996 I set up a small family firm which I called Bixa, 
the name of a plant (Bixa orellana) whose grains produce 
an orange dye. I travelled all over Indonesia to build up an 
inventory of the trees and plants that might produce col-
ours, and also held workshops with the batik artisans. I 
discovered more than 150 plant species that could provide 
colours – grains, fruit, flowers, leaves, bark, wood, roots – 
and created a network of people who lived on the islands 
where the plants and trees grow and who were able to send 
me supplies for my workshop. Like wine and tea, each of 
the plant dyes has its own bouquet. For example, the best 
indigo (Indigofera tinctoria) grows in Tuban (eastern Java); 
the densest red, on the island of Sumbawa (Morinda citrifo-
lia); the deepest brown, in Kalimantan; the most beautiful 
violet on the island of Madura (Azadarecta indica); claret in 
Sumatra and Papuasia (Arteca catechu); and a breath-taking 
yellow (Artocarpus integral) on the branches of the bread 
trees all over Indonesia. But not all these plants are suitable 
for batik; after the first stage in the production, caustic soda 
(soda abu) is normally used to remove the wax, which takes 
the shine off some of the colours.

publicó entonces un documento que prohibía las exporta-
ciones de textiles procedentes de Indonesia, incluidos los 
batik (ref. CBI/HB-3032 -13 de junio de 1996).
Hubo que encontrar entonces una solución para que los 
batik indonesios fueran aceptados en el mercado mundial, 
reactivando ese patrimonio cultural con el que se ganan la 
vida tantos artesanos en nuestro país. Cuando trabajaba en 
el centro del artesanado y del batik de Jogyakarta, y siendo 
químico de formación, sentí que tenía el deber de investigar 
y desarrollar colores vegetales variados, estables y prácti-
cos.
Por ello, en 1996 fundé una pequeña empresa familiar a 
la que llamé Bixa, por el nombre de una planta (Bixa orella-
na), cuyos granos producen un tinte naranja. Recorrí toda 
Indonesia para elaborar el inventario de los árboles y plan-
tas susceptibles de producir colores, realizando al mismo 
tiempo talleres con los artesanos del batik. Descubrí más de 
150 especies vegetales «colorantes» (granos, frutos, flores, 
hojas, cortezas, maderas, raíces) y tejí toda una red de cam-
pesinos en varias islas que cultivan las plantas o los árboles 
de colores para mi taller. Pues como el vino o el té, cada uno 
de los colores vegetales tiene su mantillo favorito para des-
plegar su bouquet 2 de forma óptima. Por ejemplo, el mejor 
índigo (Indigofera tinctoria) crece en Tuban (este de Java); 
el rojo más denso, en la isla de Sumbawa (Morinda citrifo-
lia); el marrón más profundo, en Kalimantan ; el violeta más 
hermoso en la isla de Madura (Azadarecta indica); el rojo 
vino en Sumatra y Papuasia (Arteca catechu); y el amarillo

The plants used to dye batik are very common species in 
Java. They are frequently used as fences in gardens around 
people’s houses, or are found in the markets, in the piles of 
refuse – for example, the skins of shallots or the sawdust 
from bread trees in the carpenters’ workshops, or even in 
the stands selling turmeric and other medicinal plants. 
But if all the batik makers went back to natural dyes, there 
would be an enormous problem – all the trees that provide 
dyestuffs would be cut down and would not be replanted. 
This return to nature runs the risk of causing an ecological 
catastrophe. Therefore, it is essential to establish a system of 
reforestation and a rational use of these trees and plants. 
Making plant vegetable dyestuffs
There are two ways to make plant vegetable dyestuffs: ex-
traction and fermentation. Fermentation is used mainly 
with Indigofera tinctoria.

then immersed in five litres of water.

Fermentation is allowed to continue for 24 hours.3. 
The leaves and stalks are removed from the solution. 4.

tas «colorantes» son buenas para los batik pues, después de 
la primera etapa de fabricación, para quitar la cera gene-
ralmente se utiliza sosa (soda abu), que deslustra algunos 
colores vegetales.
Las plantas utilizadas para teñir los batik son especies 
muy comunes en Java. Frecuentemente se las encuentra en 
los jardines que rodean las casas, pues hacen de barreras 
vegetales, y también en los mercados, en los montones de 
residuos sin valor comercial, como, por ejemplo, las pieles 
del ajo chalote o el aserrín del árbol del pan en las carpinte-
rías, o incluso en los puestos de plantas medicinales, como 
la cúrcuma. Pero si todos los artesanos del batik vuelven a 
adoptar los colores vegetales, tendremos un problema serio: 
se talarán los árboles de colores y no se los replantará; y 
este movimiento de regreso a la naturaleza corre el riesgo de 
provocar, a su vez, una catástrofe ecológica. Por lo tanto, es 
esencial establecer un sistema de repoblación forestal y de 
cultivo racional de los árboles y plantas de colores.

Hay dos procedimientos de elaboración de los colores ve-
getales: la extracción y la fermentación. La fermentación se 
aplica esencialmente a la Indigofera tinctoria.

The solution is stirred for two hours, and 25 grams of dry 5. 
lime is added.
The solution is left to stand for 24 hours.6. 
The solution is sieved and a thick paste obtained.7. 
This indigo paste can be used directly, diluting it in a 8. 
solution of liquid palm sugar, or it can be left for future 
use. 
Making the indigo solution
One kilo of indigo paste is weighed.1. 
One kilo of palm sugar is weighed.2. 
The palm sugar is left to melt in three litres of water: 3. 
first in a litre of hot water, and then in two litres of cold 
water. 
The indigo paste is placed in the palm sugar solution, 4. 
and stirred until it is a mass. The pH must be 11-12. Se-
ven litres of water are added to obtain a final volume of 
10 litres of indigo solution. 
The solution is left to stand for 24 hours.5. 
dyeing with indigo
A solution of SCO (sulphonated castor oil) is prepared, 1. 
with 5 grams of SCO per litre of water. 
The fabric to be dyed is soaked in the SCO solution. 2. 
The fabric is then immersed in the indigo solution and 3. 
stirred every five minutes, making sure that the immer-
sion is uniform. 
The fabric is rinsed with water.4. 
The fabric is hung out to dry in the open air, until the 5. 
blue colour appears; it is left to dry.
The immersion in the indigo solution is repeated two or 6. 
three times.
The fabric is left soaking for five minutes in a solution 7. 
of tamarind or lemon juice, with 15 grams per litre of 
water.
The fabric is hung out to dry. It is now ready for the 8. 
wax. 
Proceso de fermentación del índigo
Cortar las hojas y los tallos tiernos de 1. Indigofera tincto-
ria, atarlos en manojos de 1 kg, y sumergir el manojo en 
5 litros de agua.
Transcurridas 10 horas, el proceso de fermentación em-2.

azules y también de una solución acuosa verde.
Dejar que la fermentación prosiga durante 24 horas.3. 
Sacar las hojas y los tallos de la solución.4.

Dejar reposar la solución durante 24 horas.6. 
Tamizar la solución hasta obtener una pasta espesa.7. 
Esta pasta de índigo se puede utilizar directamente, dilu-8. 
yéndola en una solución de azúcar de palma líquido, o se 
la puede conservar para su utilización posterior.

Pesar 1 kg de pasta de índigo.1. 
Pesar 1 kg de azúcar de palma.2. 
Derretir el azúcar de palma en 3 litros de agua. Para ello, 3. 
es preferible derretir primero el azúcar de palma en 1 
litro de agua caliente y añadir después 2 litros de agua 
fría.
Poner la pasta de índigo dentro de la solución de azúcar 4. 
de palma, remover y amasar hasta que la pasta de índigo 
sea homogénea. Verificar el pH: 11-12. Añadir 7 litros 
de agua a fin de obtener un volumen final de 10 litros de 
solución de índigo.
Dejar reposar la solución durante 24 horas.5. 
Método de tintura con índigo
Preparar una solución de ACS (aceite de castor sulfona-1. 
do) a razón de 5 gramos de ACS por litro de agua.
Impregnar en la solución de ACS el tejido que se quiere 2. 
teñir.
Después, sumergir el tejido en la solución de índigo, re-3. 
moviendo cada cinco minutos y procurando que se em-
pape completamente y de manera totalmente uniforme.

Process of extraction: the Morinda citrifolia
One kilo of root bark of 1. Morinda citrifolia is weighed. 
The solution is prepared by weighing 10 grams of ash per 2. 
litre of water with a pH = 8-9.
The root bark is boiled for an hour in 10 litres of this 3. 
solution. 
The extract is sieved and collected.4. 
The extract is left to cool. 5. 
Mordant
The mordant is made from solutions of alum, lime and wa-
ter lily. None of these three essences is harmful to the envi-
ronment, and they have been used in Indonesia for many 
years. For example, alum is used to purify well water; lime, 
to chew betel leaves; and water lily mixed with alang-alang 
is used to fatten cows. 
Formula of the mordant
Solution of alum 70 g/l1. 
Solution of lime 50 g/l2. 
Solution of water lily 50 g/l3. 
Aclarar el tejido con agua.4. 
Tender el tejido al aire libre hasta que aparezca el color 5. 
azul y esperar a que esté seco.
Repetir la inmersión en la solución de índigo dos o tres 6. 
veces.
Dejar que el tejido se impregne durante 5 minutos en 7. 
una solución de zumo de tamarindo o de limón, a razón 
de 15 gramos por litro de agua.
Tender el tejido al aire libre hasta que esté seco. Ya está a 8. 
punto para recibir la cera.
Proceso de extracción  
(ejemplo: la Morinda citrifolia)
Pesar 1 kg de corteza de raíz de 1. Morinda citrifolia.
Preparar la solución pesando 10 gramos de ceniza por 2. 
litro de agua con un pH = 8-9.
Cocer la corteza de raíz durante 1 hora en 10 litros de 3. 
esta solución.
Tamizar y recoger el extracto.4. 
Dejar enfriar el extracto.5. 
Mordiente
El mordiente se fabrica a partir de soluciones de alumbre, cal 
y lirio de agua. Ninguna de estas tres esencias es perniciosa 
para el medio ambiente y en Indonesia tradicionalmente se 
las ha utilizado desde hace mucho tiempo. Por ejemplo, el 
alumbre se utiliza para purificar el agua de los pozos; la cal, 
para mascar la hoja de betel; y el lirio de agua mezclado con 
alang-alang sirve para el engorde de las vacas.
Fórmula del mordiente
Solución de alumbre: 70 gramos/litro.1. 
Solución de cal: 50 gramos/litro.2. 
Solución de nenúfares: 50 gramos/litro.3.
