«Hay que conocer las normas para romperlas. Esto es lo que 
busco, demoler las normas pero manteniendo la tradición.»
Profundamente culto, apasionado de «todo aquello que 
se hace con las manos», introvertido e hiperactivo, Mc-
Queen nunca se consideró un artista, sólo un diseñador. Su 
público fue, por tanto, el mundo de la moda, que proba-
blemente no era el más apropiado para apreciar su obra…, 
aunque gracias a él pudo permitirse hacer lo que quisiera, 
sin limitaciones ni cortapisas.
Su medio de expresión fue el show, pieza fundamental y 
punto de partida de cada colección. Cada show una historia, 
un ambiente, una escenografía cuidada hasta la obsesión y 
trabajada con un grupo de colaboradores fiel y compacto. 
Su objetivo nunca fue crear trajes hermosos sino provocar 
un choque emocional, despertar los sentidos hacia nuevas 
percepciones de la belleza, evocar el contraste entre opues-
tos: bello/grotesco, vida/muerte, luz/oscuridad.
La trayectoria vital y profesional de McQueen es tan sor-
prendente y excesiva como su obra, y en el libro que pre-
sentamos viene referenciada por la periodista Susannah 
Frankel. Sin embargo, es la entrevista de Tim Blakes a Sarah 
Burton la que permitirá al lector acercarse mucho más a la 
personalidad de McQueen, su sistema de trabajo y su rela-
ción con el entorno.
El cuerpo central del libro lo constituye el catálogo de 
obras presentadas en la exposición que le dedicó el Metro-
politan hace unos meses. Una selección extensa en el tiem-
po y en la tipología, que parte ya desde la colección que di-
señó McQueen para su graduación en el St. Martin’s College 
de Londres (1992) hasta la última que vio la luz, ya después 
de su muerte, en primavera de 2010. El trabajo se debe a 
Andrew Bolton, conservador del Costume Institute de Nue-
va York, y a la magnífica fotografía de Solve Sundsbo.
Las piezas se presentan agrupadas según las grandes 
líneas creativas de McQueen, presididas por su particular 
interpretación del romanticismo (gótico, exótico, naciona-
lista, primitivista, naturalista…) y muestran la inimitable 
“You’ve got to know the rules to break them. That’s what 
I’m here for, to demolish the rules but to keep the tradition.”
Highly cultured, passionate about “everything that is 
handmade”, introverted and hyperactive, McQueen never 
considered himself an artist, but a designer. His public was, 
therefore, the world of fashion, probably not the best suited 
to appreciate his work ... but thanks to the world of fashion 
he was able to do what he wanted, without limitations or 
restrictions.
He expressed himself through the “show”, the point of 
departure of each of his collections. Each show was a story, 
an atmosphere, a meticulously constructed scenography, 
created in conjunction with a tight-knit group of loyal col-
leagues. His goal was never to create beautiful clothes but 
to cause an emotional impact, to awaken the senses to new 
perceptions of beauty, to evoke the contrast between oppo-
sites – the beautiful and the grotesque, life and death, light 
and dark.
McQueen’s life and professional career were as surpris-
ing and excessive as his work. In the book under review 
here the journalist Susannah Frankel gives her vision of it. 
However, it is Tim Blake’s interview with Sarah Burton that 
brings the reader closest to McQueen’s personality, his way 
of working and his relationship with the world around him.
The central body of the book is the catalogue of crea-
tions presented at the exhibition that the Metropolitan de-
voted to his work a few months ago: an extensive selection 
both in terms of time and typology, which starts with the 
collection McQueen designed for his graduation from St. 
Martin’s College, London in 1992 to the last one that saw 
the light of day, after his death in spring 2010. The book 
is edited by Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Insti-
tute in New York, and includes magnificent photography by 
Solve Sundsbo.
The pieces are grouped according to McQueen’s broad 
creative interests, headed by his original interpretation of 
romanticism: Gothic exotic, nationalist, primitive, natural-

imaginación y maestría del diseñador tanto en el dominio 
de la forma y el corte como en el uso de los materiales has-
ta el punto de transgredir los límites entre texturas (duro/
blando, orgánico/mineral) y apariencias (humano/animal/
vegetal).
Es posible que McQueen fuera incomprendido en el ám-
bito estricto de la moda. Parece que tampoco se encontraba 
muy cómodo en este entorno, un mundo que no era el suyo 
aunque le daba de comer y le permitía gastar fortunas en 
una performance o en encargar tejidos o materiales que luego 
podía desechar. Y es que su obra, guste o no, es, sencilla-
mente, arte.

use of materials to the point of transgressing the bounda-
ries between textures – hard and soft, organic and mineral 
– and appearances – human, animal, and vegetable.
Perhaps McQueen was misunderstood in the strict field 
of fashion. He never seems to have felt entirely at home in 
this environment, a world that was not his but which fed 
him and allowed him to spend fortunes on a performance 
or to order fabrics or materials which he could then discard. 
And his work, whether we like it or not, it is simply art.

Durante el último cuarto del siglo xx Barcelona vive un im-
presionante crecimiento económico a partir de la expansión 
de la industria del algodón. Este crecimiento industrial va 
acompañado del surgimiento de nuevas entidades de crédi-
to y del enriquecimiento a partir de la especulación bursátil 
al que sigue una grave crisis económica. La primera mitad 
de la década de 1880 se ha llamado los años de la «fiebre de 
oro»: la burguesía catalana se enriquece a partir de inver-
siones bursátiles cada vez más arriesgadas e irracionales. La 
fiebre de oro culminó con la quiebra de importantes institu-
ciones financieras catalanas, que ya no se recuperaron y, de 
rebote, llevó la industria a la crisis. La gran protagonista de 
este período es la burguesía catalana que, amparada en su 
enriquecimiento, quiere ganar prestigio con el mecenazgo 
de las artes y fija su mirada en la ciudad de París asimilando 
las corrientes artísticas, políticas, estéticas, sociales... 
El escritor catalán Narcís Oller (1846-1930) escribe su 
gran obra La febre d’or, un magnífico retrato de esta bur-
guesía, de su afán de enriquecimiento y de cómo este ma-
terialismo comportará una pérdida de valores. La novela es 
el telón de fondo del catálogo y la exposición La febre d’or. 
Escenes de la nova burgesia, que nos permite visualizar la ra-
diografía de esta burguesía industrial y financiera que vivió 
una época dorada, y los cambios culturales que se produje-
ron desde el último tercio del siglo xix hasta principios del 
xx. Tal y como ha manifestado Miquel-Àngel Codes, comi-
sario de la exposición y autor de algunos de los artículos del 
catálogo, tres elementos son los ejes de trabajo: el progreso 
como motivo central de esta nueva clase social, su tenden-
cia a caer en el materialismo, que aparecen retratados en la 
novela de Narcís Oller, y un tercero, cómo la burguesía en 
su afán de ganar prestigio fue promotora de las artes. Todo 
el arte de este período, ya sea el llamado realista, modernis-
ta o simbolista, tiene un nexo de unión: la burguesía. Los 
miembros pertenecientes a esta clase social fueron los com-
pradores y en muchos casos los protagonistas de las obras.
A través del estudio de los autores y las imágenes de 
Towards the end of the nineteenth century, Barcelona un-
derwent impressive economic growth thanks to the ex-
pansion of the cotton industry. It was accompanied by the 
emergence of new credit firms and stock market specula-
tion, followed by a period of serious economic recession. 
The first years of the 1880s were called the “gold rush”, when 
the Catalan bourgeoisie grew rich from increasingly risky 
investments: it ended with the collapse of Catalonia’s main 
financial institutions and industrial crisis. The leading pro-
tagonist of this period was the Catalan bourgeoisie, which, 
supported by its wealth, aimed to acquire prestige through 
the patronage of the arts and looked to the city of Paris as its 
artistic, political, aesthetic, and social model. 
The Catalan writer Narcis Oller (1846-1930) completed 
his great work La Febre d’Or (Gold Fever) in 1893. It was 
a magnificent portrait of the bourgeoisie, of its desire for 
wealth and its progressive loss of values. The novel is the 
backdrop for the exhibition and the catalogue  “The Gold 
Fever: Scenes from the new bourgeoisie”, an x-ray of this 
industrial and financial bourgeoisie who lived through 
a golden age, and of the cultural changes of the late nine-
teenth and early twentieth centuries. For Miguel Ángel 
Codes, exhibition curator and author of some of the en-
tries in the catalogue, the exhibition focuses on two main 
elements: progress as the driving force among this new 
class, and their tendency to fall into the trap of materia- 
lism. These phenomena are both portrayed in Oller’s novel. 
To these two elements, the curator of the exhibition adds 
the bourgeoisie’s keenness to promote the arts as a prestige 
activity. All the art of this period, be it realist, modernist or 
symbolist, has a link: the bourgeoisie. The bourgeoisie were 
the buyers of these works and in many cases the protago-
nists as well.
The study of the authors and images from the works 
of Ramon Casas, Santiago Rusiñol, Joan Llimona, Manuel 
Cusí, Francisco Galofre, Lluís Graner and Modesto Teixi-
dor can provide fascinating insights into these exhilarating

las obras de Ramón Casas, Santiago Rusiñol, Joan Llimo-
na, Manuel Cusí, Francisco Galofre, Lluís Graner o Mo-
desto Teixidor, entre otros, se conoce mejor este período 
convulso. El hilo argumental de la novela de Oller nos sir-
ve para mostrar la evolución de esta burguesía y cómo las 
obras de arte que se realizan son su espejo. La dolce vita 
que estos cuadros retratan tiene sin duda también un in-
terés sociológico y así ha quedado documentado en el 
correspondiente catálogo. Un período en que nacen nue-
vas costumbres como el veraneo, la compra de obras de 
arte y la cultura del exhibicionismo: mirar y ser mirado. 
Estas obras son un compendio de los gustos estéticos de la 
burguesía y un excelente documento histórico para conocer 
las escenas que protagonizaron, sus espacios y sus costum-
bres, muchos de los cuales ayudaron a crear y aún perduran. 
Además de las obras de arte también destacan objetos de 
época y documentos que permiten reconstruir el contexto 
histórico: las acciones de la Compañía General de Tabacos de 
Filipinas y del Banco de Barcelona,  un cartel de la Exposición 
Universal de Barcelona de 1888, un anuncio de champán 
francés, un vestido para mujer y otro masculino de la época.
Además de los textos de Miquel-Àngel Codes Luna, co-
misario de la exposición y experto en arte catalán de finales 
del siglo xix, en el catálogo también participan los historia-
dores del arte Francesc Fontbona e Isabel Fabregat Marín 
y la profesora de la Universidad de Barcelona y experta en 
literatura catalana de finales del xix, Rosa Cabré i Monné.
times. The novel’s storyline serves to reveal the evolution of 
the bourgeoisie and of the works of art that are a reflection 
of the society. The dolce vita that these paintings depict is of 
great sociological interest and is documented in the cata-
logue. The period saw the emergence of new customs such 
as spending the summer outside the city, buying works of 
art, and cultivating exhibitionism: that is, looking at others 
and being looked at oneself.
These works are a compendium of the aesthetic tastes 
of the bourgeoisie and an excellent historical document for 
learning more about their lives and customs, many of which 
endure until the present day. As well as works of art, the 
catalogue also includes vintage objects and documents that 
allow us to reconstruct the historical context: the activity 
of the Tobacco Company of the Philippines and the Bank 
of Barcelona,  a poster from the Universal Exhibition held 
in Barcelona in 1888, an advertisement for French cham-
pagne, and male and female dress from the period.
In addition to the texts by Miguel Ángel Codes Luna, ex-
hibition curator and expert in Catalan art of the late nine-
teenth century, the catalogue also includes work by art his-
torians Francesc Fontbona and Isabel Fabregat Marin and 
by Rosa Cabré i Monné, lecturer at the University of Barce-

Mariaelena Roqué, artista multidisciplinar catalano-ve-
nezolana, creadora de vestuario, escenógrafa, directora ar-
tística y cofundadora de la Companyia Carles Santos (1985-
2010), es autora de los más de 150 trajes de escena que se 
muestran en el catálogo de la exposición.
Rebelde e inconformista, rechaza la indumentaria cos-
tumbrista en escena. Inventa vestidos que responden a la 
anatomía y el movimiento del cuerpo. Este proceso le lleva 
a cubrir y descubrir al intérprete en un trabajo de transfor-
mación continua del personaje durante la representación y 
evolución escénica de la partitura musical.
Carles Santos —pianista, compositor, artista conceptual 
y director de orquesta y coro— es al mismo tiempo sujeto y 
objeto de su obra, actor central de su relato, en complicidad 
con Mariaelena Roqué.
«Afinidades electivas bajo el signo de Eros», el primer 
capítulo del libro, narra cómo en este encuentro con-
fluyen la música, las artes visuales y plásticas, la danza, el 
cine y la alta costura en un lenguaje escénico reconocible 
y único, producto de la unión tumultuosa Roqué-Santos. 
Una obra total que resulta espectacular porque es singular, 
sorprendente, seductora, de rabiosa vanguardia contem-
poránea.
La segunda parte del libro muestra cómo en cada obra, 
en cada escenografía, toman cuerpo sus creaciones y destaca 
la capacidad de transformación que ejerce la indumentaria 
en el escenario. Este proceso de construir y deconstruir los 
personajes lleva implícito un trabajo de investigación sobre 
la historia del arte y la moda, donde el vestuario integra el 
intérprete en la obra escénica, escapando del mero disfraz e 
imitación literal.
Este libro se suma a la puesta en valor actual de su obra 
“Mariaelena Roqué and Carles Santos met in Barcelona in 
1982. One day, their paths crossed, joined, and since then 
have merged together without ever becoming confused. 
Their meeting, the union of their vital and creative energies, 
gave birth to a quarter of a century of spectacular creativity.”
Mariaelena Roqué, a multidisciplinary artist, half Cata-
lan, half Venezuelan, costume designer, scenographer, ar-
tistic director and cofounder of the Carles Santos Company 
(1985-2010), is the creator of more than 150 stage costumes 
which are now displayed in the catalogue of the exhibition. 
Rebellious and nonconformist, Mariaelena rejects con-
ventional stage dress: she invents costumes that match the 
anatomy and the movement of the body. This process leads 
her to cover and uncover the actor in a continuous work 
of transformation of the character during the performance 
and evolution of the musical score.
Carles Santos – pianist, composer, conceptual artist and 
orchestra and chorus director – is both at the subject and 
object of his work, the central figure in his account, in com-
plicity with Mariaelena Roqué.
“Elective Affinities under the sign of Eros”, the first chap-
ter in the book, tells how their meeting brings together mu-
sic, visual and plastic arts, dance, film and high fashion, in 
a recognizable and unique theatrical language, the product 
of their tumultuous union. A spectacular : singular, surpris-
ing, seductive, contemporary art at the cutting edge.
The second part of the book shows how in each work, 
each scenography, their creations take shape and develop 
their capacity for transformation. This process of con-
structing and deconstructing the characters requires thor-
ough research into the history of art and fashion, where the 
costume becomes a part of the actor, going beyond mere 
disguise and imitation.
This book, which consolidates their work as cultural her-
itage, is a reflection of the exhibition held at the Musée des 
Tissus de Lyon in 2010. Their work has also been exhibited 
at the Centre National du Costume de Scène de Moulins
