Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli selvittää opettajien tiedon määrää ja tarvetta alakouluikäisen lapsen diabeteksesta. Tutkimusongelmia olivat: Kuinka paljon opettajat tietävät ja tarvitsevat tietoa tyypin 1 diabeteksesta? Minkälaista on yhteistyö opettajan ja terveydenhoitajan välillä? Olisiko
tyypin 1 diabetesta käsittelevälle oppaalle tarvetta Myllymäen koulussa? On tärkeää, että opettajat tietävät miten toimia diabeteksen aiheuttamissa vaaratilanteissa sekä ymmärtävät sairauden vakavuuden ja moniulotteisuuden.
Suomalaisia tutkimuksia opettajien tiedontarpeesta tyypin 1 diabetekseen liittyen ei löytynyt, joten tiedontarvetta selvitettiin kyselyllä. Yhteistyökumppanina toimi Hämeenlinnan Myllymäen koulu. Aineistona käytettiin
muun muassa Sosiaali- ja terveysministeriön selvitystä Toimintamalli diabetesta sairastavan lapsen koulupäivän aikaisesta hoidosta, jonka tarkoituksena on selventää vastuujakoja diabeetikkolapsen kohdalla.
Tutkimustuloksista selvisi, että opettajilla on melko hyvin tietoa tyypin 1 diabeteksesta. He tietävät esimerkiksi, miten toimia lapsen käytöksen muuttuessa tai lapsen mennessä tajuttomaksi. Lisätietoa he tarvitsevat muun muassa insuliinishokista ja korkean verensokerin haitoista. Yhteistyö
opettajien ja terveydenhoitajan välillä koettiin toimivaksi ja avoimeksi. Opettajat saavat riittävästi tukea ja tietoa terveydenhoitajalta liittyen tyypin 1 diabetekseen. Diabeetikkolapsen koulupäivän aikainen hoito Myllymäen
koululla vastaa Sosiaali- ja terveysministeriön selvitystä. Koulupäivän aikana kouluohjaajat ovat diabeetikkolapsen hoidosta vastuussa, vaikka päävastuu on lapsen vanhemmilla. Opettajat toimivat ammatillisten rajojensa puitteissa eivätkä osallistu diabeetikkolapsen lääkehoitoon.
Terveydenhoitotyön kehittämistehtävässä on tarkoitus tehdä opas, joka vastaa opettajien tiedontarpeeseen. Tutkimuksessa selvisi, että tällaiselle oppaalle olisi tarvetta.The aim of this thesis was to find out how much school teachers know and need knowledge about type 1 diabetes in children. Research problems discussed how much teachers know and need information about type 1 diabetes, what kind of
cooperation there is between the teachers and the school nurse and do the teachers of Myllymäki Primary School need a guide about type 1 diabetes in children. It’s important that teachers know how to act in dangerous situations caused by type 1 diabetes.
Finnish researches about this subject were not found so the need of knowledge was surveyed by a questionnaire study. The partner in cooperation was Myllymäki Primary School in Hämeenlinna. The report Toimintamalli diabetesta sairastavan
lapsen koulupäivän aikaisesta hoidosta published by Ministry of Social Affairs and Health was applied in the theory in the thesis. The aim of the report is to clarify the responsibilities for a diabetic child among parents and school personnel.
The survey results revealed that the teachers have quite a lot of knowledge about type 1 diabetes. For example they know how to act if the behavior of a child changes or if a child loses consciousness. Among other things, they need more
information about insulin shock and the negative effects of high blood sugar. The cooperation between the teachers and the school nurse was found practical and open. The teachers get support and information about type 1 diabetes sufficiently
from the school nurse. The care of a diabetic child during a school day in Myllymäki Primary School is similar to the that in the report published by Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. During the school day a school helper is responsible
for the care of a diabetic child but the parents have the principal responsibility. The teachers act within the limits of their profession and they don’t take part in the medical care of a diabetic child.
The aim of the development work of public health nurse studies is to make a guide for the teachers to answer to their need of knowledge. The results reveled that there is demand for that kind of guide
