Canopy (‘coberta vegetal’) és una estructura 
temporal que s’aixeca al pati del P.S.1 
Contemporary Art Center, feta de pals de 
bambú verd acabats de tallar que s’aniran 
tornant més marrons com més s’acosti el 
final de l’estiu. El projecte es recolza en un 
sistema tectònic singular per a la provisió 
d’ombra, estructura i ambients que van 
canviant, i dóna lloc al que els arquitectes 
conceben com un “paisatge profund” que 
afecta tota l’extensió del pati.
Canopy is a temporary structure in the 
P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center’s courtyard, 
built out of freshly cut green bamboo poles 
that will turn from green to tan by the end 
of the summer. The project relies on a 
singular tectonic system to bind together 
provisions of overhead shade, structure 
and varying atmospheres, resulting in 
what the architects envisage as a ‘deep 
landscape’ that affects the entire depth of 
the courtyard.

Les deformacions puntuals de l’estructura de 
bambú produeixen una gamma de densitats 
d’ombra i de dibuixos per la superfície 
del pati durant el dia. Les depressions de 
la coberta defi neixen estances obertes al 
cel, cadascuna amb un entorn climàtic 
particular per a diferents escales i formes de 
relax: Pool Pad, l’espai exterior més gran, 
incorpora una petita piscina; Fog Pad té 
canons vaporitzadors d’aigua que estenen 
una aurèola boirosa; Rock Pad consisteix en 
un petit accident elevat a la grava; Meeting 
Pad proporciona un seient íntim per a cinc 
persones; Rainforest incorpora un entorn de 
so i aspersors d’aigua que faciliten pluges 
intermitents, i l’el·lipsi mig oberta de Sand 
Hump s’orienta per si mateixa per portar al 
màxim l’exposició al sol i a l’ombra. 
En anglès canopy es refereix tant 
a una coberta en arc sota el cel com a la 
zona més alta d’un bosc o d’una selva. Els 
arquitectes van desenvolupar la idea d’un 
“paisatge profund” per fer un entreteixit 
entre el lloc existent (terra, murs de formigó, 
cel) i un sistema d’un únic material. Canopy 
mostra diferents transformacions amb el 
temps, un aspecte del disseny que cau 
típicament en el terreny de l’arquitectura 
del paisatge. L’estructura juxtaposa el grau 
fi ns al qual un material natural pot ser 
geomètricament manipulat i controlat amb 
el seu comportament imprevisible en el 
transcurs del temps. De la mateixa manera 
que la coberta de bambú verd es va tornant 
marró, perd la humitat i es fa més lleugera i 
fràgil, també perd la tendència a tornar a la 
seva posició inicial, de manera que permet 
fi xar-ne la geometria ondulant. Aquest 
canvi és més pronunciat a les àrees menys 
ombrejades del pati. Els nivells canviants 
d’humitat també afecten els canvis de color 
i de propietats del material: el vapor dels 
aspersors farà que el bambú que hi sigui 
més a prop estigui verd i elàstic durant 
més temps que el bambú de les àrees més 
seques. Factors addicionals, com ara el 
temps transcorregut des de l’aixecament de 
l’estructura i l’exposició al sol, el diàmetre 
dels pals i l’orientació, contribueixen a 
un ventall de colors molt ample. Una 
transformació paral·lela té lloc al Rainforest, 
on el bambú plantat i que es manté viu 
per aspersions d’aigua cada mitja hora va 
creixent constantment i produint nous 
rebrots al llarg de tot l’estiu. 
Pinches in the bamboo lattice produce a 
range of shadow densities and patterns across 
the courtyard and throughout the day. Dips 
in the canopy defi ne rooms open to the sky, 
each with a distinct climatic environment for 
different modes and scales of lounging: Pool 
Pad, the largest outdoor room, incorporates a 
wading pool; Fog Pad consists of fog nozzles 
that will spread a cool halo of mist; Rock Pad 
is a dry elevated blip in the gravel, Meeting 
Pad provides an intimate seat for fi ve, 
Rainforest features a sound environment and 
water misters that provide intermittent rain 
showers; and Sand Hump’s half-open ellipse 
orients itself to maximise exposure to sun 
and shade.
The word ‘canopy’ refers to both 
the overarching covering of a sky and the 
uppermost region of a forest. The architects 
developed the idea of a ‘deep landscape’ 
to stitch together the limits of the existing 
site (ground, concrete walls, sky) with one 
material system. Canopy reveals various 
transformations over time, a design aspect 
typically falling within the domain of 
landscape architecture. The structure 
juxtaposes the degree to which a natural 
material can be geometrically manipulated 
and controlled with its unpredictable 
behaviour over time. As the green bamboo 
canopy turns tan, it loses its moisture and 
becomes lighter and more brittle, but it also 
loses its tendency to spring back and settles 
into its undulating geometry. This change is 
more pronounced in the less shaded areas of 
the courtyard. Varying humidity levels also 
effect the changes in colour and material 
properties: mist from the fog nozzles will 
keep the immediately surrounding bamboo 
green and supple longer than the bamboo in 
the dryer areas. Additional factors such as 
the time since erection and exposure to the 
sun, pole diameter and orientation contribute 
to Canopy’s wide colour gradient. A parallel 
transformation occurs in the Rainforest, 
where the live planted bamboo, kept moist 
with water misters every half hour, steadily 
grows in height and produces new green 
shoots throughout the summer.
