El objetivo principal del presente artículo es mostrar, a partir del análisis de las fuentes latinas la enorme multiplicidad que encierran los vocablos mercaror y negotiator. Lo que a simple vista pueden parecer simples designaciones económicas referidas a un mismo concepto, la figura del comerciante, se nos muestran como realidades complejas que engloban de forma indisoluble aspectos económicos, sociales e ideológicos.The main objective of this article is to show, from the epigraphycal, juridical and literary latin sources, the great multiplicity of meaning which the words mercator and negotiator include. What first sight these words may signify simple economical designations refered to a single concept -the "merchant" personality-, actually they appear as complex realities which are composed of indissolubly social, economical and ideological aspects
