The unknown, and everything concerned with the Great Beyond, has always caused fear in humans and, in turn, this has been exploited for the convenience and interest of the established authorities, from ancient times down to today. Linked to words like evil, divine punishment, plague or disease, this made possible the need to correct or condemn those any of these terms could be linked with. If this could not be achieved, the link was made by extending the context of fear with further terms: disease and plague; witches, heretics and pagans; books, pictures or crafts.
During the Council of Toledo in 1324, women were branded flighty, dishonest and corrupt, and, in 1326, Pope John XXII classified witchcraft as formal heresy in the Bull Super Illius Specula, assimilating diabolical sorcery and witchcraft to heresy. With this, the biggest losers in the Middle Ages were female midwives, who, because of their expertise in medicine and botany, were condemned, imprisoned in psychiatric hospitals, and considered as sick or possessed by Satan.Lo desconocido y lo relacionado con el Más Allá siempre ha producido temor en el ser humano y, a su vez, ha sido aprovechado a conveniencia e interés de poderes establecidos, desde la Antigüedad hasta hoy día. Unido a palabras como diabólico, castigo divino, plaga o enfermedad, ha posibilitado la necesidad de correctivo o condena de aquellos que a cualquiera de estos términos esté vinculado y si no lo estaba, se provocaba la vinculación ampliando con más términos el contexto de lo temido: enfermedades y plagas, brujos y brujas, herejes y paganos, libros, imágenes u oficios.
Durante el Concilio de Toledo de 1324 se califica a la mujer de liviana, deshonesta o corrompida y en 1326, el papa Juan XXII concedió la categoría de herejía formal a la brujería con la bula Super Illius Specula, asimilando maleficio a brujería diabólica y a herejía. Con ello, las mayores perdedoras fueron durante la Edad Media las mujeres matronas, por sus conocimientos en medicina o botánica fueron condenadas, encerradas en psiquiátricos, consideradas enfermas o poseídas por Satanás
