La construcció del “mite” de Figueres és un acte col•lectiu que, basat en l’impuls socieoeconòmic i cultural de la ciutat del segle XIX, cristal•litza en el primer terç del segle XX. Un mite basat en el caràcter obert de la ciutat, amb el predomini del republicanisme catalanista, i que, sobretot, impulsava la cultura com a element democratitzador de la societat. Contribueixen al mite l’alcalde Marià Pujolà, l’intel•lectual Josep Puig Pujades, i altres agrupats a l’Empordà federal. Qui acaba per donar-lo a conèixer a l’exterior és Salvador Dalí.
