Letters and numbers. Spanish book production in the twentieth century through the statistical sources

Abstract

No abundan los estudios de largo plazo sobre la industria editorial española basados en series estadísticas. Se ha considerado que las deficiencias de las fuentes desaconsejan su uso para reconstruir la evolución del sector editorial, y su empleo se ha limitado por lo general a periodos cortos y como complemento del texto, no como base del relato. Este trabajo utiliza y analiza cinco de las fuentes, e intenta demostrar que sirven para cimentar un relato acerca de la evolución del sector durante el siglo xx. Se ofrece una periodización basada en los resultados conjuntos de todas ellas y se vinculan las tendencias detectadas a los principales acontecimientos que vivió el sector en cada momento.Long-term studies about the Spanish book publishing industry based on time series are scarce. It has been long considered that Spanish statistical sources about this industry are unreliable, so they pose problems when trying to quantify the evolution of the sector. Subsequently,available statistical sources have frequently been used only as a complement to the text. This article examines five of those sources and uses them to build a narrative around them for the Spanish book publishing sector in the twentieth century. Based on the results, this article establishes five stages in the Spanish book publishing sector for the last century and links those trends to the main developments in every perio
