In the research regarding adoption, one of the most common lines of study is the comparison between children and teenagers who are adopted and those who are not. The literature has tended to show high levels of adjustment and performance among adopted youngsters, although the data vary from one study to another depending on, mainly, the type of adopted children taken into consideration and the comparison groups which are used. This paper reports a comparative study in which a total of 865 Andalusian children between the ages of 4 and 16 were studied. These children came from four different groups: adopted children, their current classmates, children fiom the areas where the adopted children came from, and institutionalized children. The comparisons were carried out in three areas: behavior problems, self-estee and academic achievement. The results showed a big similarity between the adopted children and their current classmates, the institutionalized children being the ones who obtained the worst results in the comparisons as a whole.En la investigación sobre adopción, una de las líneas de trabajo más habituales consiste en la comparación entre los niños y adolescentes adoptados y los que no lo son. La literatura ha tendido a mostrar buenos niveles de ajuste y de desempeño entre los adoptados, aunque los datos varían de unas investigaciones a otras en función en gran medida del tipo de adoptados que se considere y de los grupos de comparación que se utilicen. En este articulo se da cuenta de un estudio comparativo en que se estudió a un total de 865 niños andaluces de entre 4 y 16 años de edad procedentes de cuatro grupos: adoptados, compañeros actuales, niños de las zonas de origen de los adoptados y niños institucionalizados. Las comparaciones se llevaron a cabo en tres áreas: problemas de conducta, autoestima y rendimiento académico. Los resultados mostraron una gran semejanza entre los adoptados y sus compañeros actuales, siendo los niños de instituciones los que peores resultados obtuvieron en el conjunto de las comparaciones
