Migration and urban growth: Seridó Potiguar in analysis

Abstract

O Seridó Potiguar localiza-se no Semi-árido nordestino, região susceptível a períodos de estiagem, cuja base econômica agrária prevaleceu até os anos de 1970. O estudo das migrações campo-cidade, no interstício 1940/2000 nos coloca frente as evidências de um crescimento urbano neste espaço regional. Este processo foi desencadeado por mudanças circunscritas as relações de trabalho e aos novos signos que a cidade encerra, descortinando-se como espaço de promissão do saber, do trabalho e do lazer. Neste sentido, as migrações provocam o crescimento da população citadina com ampliação do sítio urbano, gerando uma pressão social sobre o poder público no que se refere a oferta de serviços e de empregos. Além disso, o deslocamento populacional favoreceu a emergência e proliferação do mercado informal, importante fonte de renda nos dias atuais.Seridó Potiguar is located in the Semi-arid Northeasterner, area subject to periods of drought, whose agrarian economical base prevailed until the years 1970. The study of the migrations country-city, in the interval of 1940/2000 places us front the evidences of an urban growth in this regional space. This process was unchained by changes in the work relationships and to the new signs that the city contains, openning a space of possibilities, of the knowledge, of the work and of the leisure. In this sense, migrations provoke the population growth with amplification of the urban ranch, generating a social pressure about the public power in what refers the offer of services and employments. Besides, the population displacement favored the emergency and proliferation of the informal market, important source of income in the current days
