El megacine: un nuevo fenómeno americano
da. La Star ya dirigía varios cines de éxito en el área de
Detroit y hacía un esfuerzo específico en aspectos
como confort, limpieza y servicio con cortesía. Las
ventas anuales en los cines de la cadena Star crecían un
impresionante 25% anual, y Sony Entertainment tomó
buena nota. Star Southfield es hoy en día el complejo
de cine más grande que tiene la cadena Sony-Loews,
una división de Sony Entertainment.
Sony Entertainment contrató a la empresa de ar-
quitectos Rockwell Group, responsable del exitosísimo
concepto global de Planet Hollywood, para desarrollar
este proyecto. El Rockwell Group diseñó un ambiente
típicamente temático que intenta captar la emoción de
las salas de cine de principios de siglo. El edificio, que
tiene un decorado art decó, proyecta una presencia dis-
tintiva y diferente de los complejos de cine de subur-
bio, aburridos y cuadrados. Según David Rockwell, el
arquitecto jefe del grupo de diseño, y Jim Loeks, jefe
de Star Theatres, «sólo entrar al edificio tiene que va-
ler el precio de la entrada».
Parece que la ola de ambientes temáticos ha pasado
sobre muchos negocios hoy en día, y las salas de cine
no son una excepción. Con un costo de más de 40 mi-
llones de dólares, este ambiente de cine tipo Disney es
de un desarrollo muy costoso. Pero Sony Entertain-
ment tiene confianza y ya planifica varios proyectos
parecidos en otras regiones de Estados Unidos. Si el
éxito del primer fin de semana inaugural de Star
Southfield, cuando 40.000 espectadores compraron
entradas, es un indicio del entusiasmo del público por
este tipo de experiencia de entretenimiento, el futuro
parece luminoso. El tiempo dirá si estos ambientes te-
máticos tendrán que rediseñarse por completo cada
cinco años para mantener el interés del público, o si las
cuestiones de confort y eficiencia serán la razón básica
de la aprobación del público. Hay una cosa segura: la
película ya no es, para muchas personas, la única ra-
zón para ir al cine; y los que entienden eso están ha-
ciendo la revolución en la industria de exhibición de
cine en Norteamérica.
The mega-movie: a new American
phenomenon
With the recent opening of a brand new and gigantic
multi-screen theater in the suburbs of Detroit (Michi-
gan), a new trend in the entertainment business is her-
alded. Boasting no less than 20 different auditoriums,
seats for 6,000 people, parking for 5,000 vehicles,
state-of-the-art digital sound systems, and an unmis-
takable theme-park design, the Star Southfield com-
plex represents what the movie business in the United
States believes the future of this form of entertainment
will be like.
According to some analysts, such large scale
projects are simply a response to consumer demand.
Just as individual stores gave way to shopping centers
and superstores, or neighborhood groceries to super-
markets and giant discount food stores, the small mov-
ie theater has been supplanted first by the multiplex
and now the megaplex. Gigantic entertainment com-
plexes such as the Star Southfield, with a built area of
more than 50,000 square meters, offer an answer to
the profile of the typical movie-goer, and because of its
unique entertainment environment, is also an invita-
tion to those who do not go the movies as often. At
Star Southfield spectators are greeted by a monumen-
tal Art Deco inspired building and then pass through
three main spaces before they reach the theaters. First
there is a Hollywood style studio entrance in the form
of a fabulous gate. People then find themselves in an
area reminiscent of a sound stage which contains the
food concessions, serving a variety of fast food op-
tions, and marked at the center by a giant erupting
popcorn bucket, an icon of the movie experience for
the American public. Several kiosks sell movie-related
merchandise, in a space decorated with real movie
props. There is also a service booth, with a full time
concierge, who can do everything from calling a taxi
to making an airline reservation. Behind the fast food
area there is another gathering space featuring recon-
structions and installations of Detroit's architectural
landmarks, mostly of no-longer existing theaters.
These elements form a visual and spatial collage and
function as a main circulation lobby for the main
theaters.
